A Plea To Eric Mangini and the New GM

Finally back on here folks – the site was blocking me, God knows why.  Anyways, the break from here has given me time to think about the current state of the Browns and, well, as we all know, it isn’t too good.

That being said, I have come up with some things that need to be taken into consideration for the upcoming draft.  Eric Mangini and whomever becomes GM, feel free to use these couple of  ideas.

First, our areas of need, at least in my mind are,  linebacker (Ray Maualuga), conerback (Vontae Davis, Malcolm Jenkins), safety (Taylor Mays), and running back (Shonn Greene).  More on Green a bit later.  The problem here, however, is that I feel between the first four names I mention, none are top 5 picks.  This could have led to a problem under the old regime.  The one that traded away draft picks in order to move up 1-2 spots to draft a guy no one was going to pick at that point.  Ok, enough of the rant.  My point here is that we MUST trade the #5 pick and move down to, say, the 9, 10, 11, or 12 area and in the process pick up some later picks (after all we don’t have a 3rd, 5th, and 7th pick this year if memory serves correctly).

The second topic is that of running back.  It’s no secrect that the Browns could stand to draft one as Jamal Lewis looks to have finally reached E on the tank – kudos to him getting over 1,000 yards this season, though.  That being said, Greene would be the perfict replacement to Lewis, and if used correctly would be a very nice complement when teamed with Jerome Harrison (who needs to average 8-10 carries next season).  Greene is listed at 5-10, 235 lbs. and in 376 attempts has 0 fumbles, 22 touchdowns, and 2,228 yards.  That’s an average of 5.9 yards a carry – not too bad if you ask me.  By no means am I advocating Greene to be a 1st round pick, but he should be considered in the middle of the 2nd or start of the 3rd, which leads back to getting some more draft picks!!  Greene also has a history of troubles too; he was suspended from the Iowa team in 2007, but I’m sick of this high character stuff that the Browns have been trying to obtain each draft.  It’s time to take a flyer on one of these kids and I can’t think of a better time than now.
