QB Colt McCoy Won’t Play in 2010

There are no doubt fans who want quarterback Colt McCoy to play right away, but Browns president Mike Holmgren wants to make something clear: McCoy will be spending his rookie season on the sidelines.

With Jake Delhomme as the starter, it gives McCoy some time to learn the system and get acclimated to the NFL. As has been the case with many young quarterbacks in the past, being thrust into a starter’s role too early can set a player back, especially if his confidence is affected.

When given time to stand on the sidelines and “figure it all out,” it has proven to produce effective NFL quarterbacks – Philip Rivers, Aaron Rodgers, and Carson Palmer, for example. McCoy deserves the chance to learn the system without all the added pressure, though if the Browns get off to another bad start, the calls for him to start will be hard to ignore.
