Browns Make Cuts, Trim Roster to 53

NFL teams had to make their final roster cuts today in order to get to their 53 man rosters for the season.

On Friday the Browns waived a number of players which included: wide receivers Jake Allen and Syndric Steptoe, offensive tackles Casey Bender and Joel Reinders, tight end Joel Gamble, and defensive-back Coye Francies.

The team also placed RB Montario Hardesty on IR.

Today the team activated DL Shaun Rogers from the PUP list, and proceeded to make a number of cuts.  Those who got the pink slip included: defensive backs Larry Asante, Chris Chancellor, Brandon McDonald and  DeAngelo Smith, offensive linemen Paul Fanika and Pat Murray, defensive linemen Clifton Geathers, Travis Ivey and Swanson Miller, Running-back Chris Jennings, and QB Brett Ratliff.

The Browns also terminated the contracts of WR Bobby Engram, OL Scott Koistra, and DL CJ Mosley.

Some of these guys may actually still find their way onto the team this season; that is, if they clear waivers.  If they do, there is a chance the Browns could add them to the practice squad this year.

The cuts of rookies Asante (160th pick) and Geathers (186th pick) are somewhat of a shock, as the team usually gives their rookie picks a shot for one season.  I guess things are changing with Mike Holmgren now in charge – this is refreshing!

We will keep you updated and provide more analysis regarding these moves over the course of the weekend.

We kept 3 cornerbacks and 12 linebackers?

    I just don’t get it.

I’m really surprised that Brandon McDonald got cut. He was a bum of a starting CB, but I was comfortable with him as our #4. I thought his game experience alone locked up a spot for him, plus he played pretty well against the Bears.

And 12 linebackers? That seems a bit extreme. Either DC Rob Ryan is planning on instituting hockey-type line shifts at the position, or something is up.

I”m leaning towards the latter bc there’s no way we can get thru the season with just 3 CBs.

I agree Bernie. As it stands now the team has 8 DB’s (does this mean Mike Adams is the 4th corner??). 6 d-linemen! are you kidding? 12 LBS like you mentioned, two words (why? and crazy…).

Also of note, how/why did Robert Royal make the team?

I think and hope that there are still moves to be made.

I’m a little disappointed about Geathers and Reinders – two big lads that I thought could give us some grit and strength on both sides of the football.

Bernie – I’m not surprised about McDonald. He makes Elam look like a gazelle.

I was disappointed by Geathers not making the team as well (even though I didn’t anticipate him making it after watching him this preseason). He’s raw and needs a lot of work, but with his size and NFL bloodlines, there might be a player in him down the road.

And come on, Clayton, LOL. McD was pretty bad, but noone makes AE look like a gazelle. If Ward gets hurt, we’re pretty much screwed at safety. Same goes for our CB’s. If one of the big 3 goes down, GOOD NITE!
