Browns Make Cuts, Trim Roster to 53

NFL teams had to make their final roster cuts today in order to get to their 53 man rosters for the season.

On Friday the Browns waived a number of players which included: wide receivers Jake Allen and Syndric Steptoe, offensive tackles Casey Bender and Joel Reinders, tight end Joel Gamble, and defensive-back Coye Francies.

The team also placed RB Montario Hardesty on IR.

Today the team activated DL Shaun Rogers from the PUP list, and proceeded to make a number of cuts.  Those who got the pink slip included: defensive backs Larry Asante, Chris Chancellor, Brandon McDonald and  DeAngelo Smith, offensive linemen Paul Fanika and Pat Murray, defensive linemen Clifton Geathers, Travis Ivey and Swanson Miller, Running-back Chris Jennings, and QB Brett Ratliff.

The Browns also terminated the contracts of WR Bobby Engram, OL Scott Koistra, and DL CJ Mosley.

Some of these guys may actually still find their way onto the team this season; that is, if they clear waivers.  If they do, there is a chance the Browns could add them to the practice squad this year.

The cuts of rookies Asante (160th pick) and Geathers (186th pick) are somewhat of a shock, as the team usually gives their rookie picks a shot for one season.  I guess things are changing with Mike Holmgren now in charge – this is refreshing!

We will keep you updated and provide more analysis regarding these moves over the course of the weekend.
