It’s the holiday season. That means two things: you’ve spent some time in the last two weeks avoiding a family member or friend who you didn’t really want to see, and the Browns have been eliminated from playoff contention. Granted, the latter usually happens closer to Thanksgiving, but it’s still notable as playoff time is just around the corner.

This Christmas featured a nice array of gifts from my parents, per usual. One of the interesting bits was a book of Cleveland sports trivia. Nice, right? I get to read up and relearn things that have been squashed in my brain by Katy Perry lyrics and other important things.

The kicker is that the book was published in 1995, so I’ve got a heck of a lot of brushing up to do.

But as I leafed through the pages of long-forgotten seasons and names, I came to an odd thought: Is there anything about this season, and I mean anything, that will be noteworthy enough to be in a Cleveland trivia book?

Think about it – what trivia question would come up that would involve this year’s team?

Cleveland Browns running back Peyton Hillis has had one of the most bizarre seasons in recent memory. From sitting out a game due to strep throat to messy contract negotiations to a nagging hamstring injury that kept him out for five straight games, this has been a season to forget for Hillis.

But could it all really stem from the dreaded Madden curse?

At the beginning of the season, it was certainly something to scoff at. There was no way it would happen to the “Madden NFL 12″ cover boy – the big, bruising back would surely build on his 2010 campaign, in which he rushed for 1,177 yards with 11 touchdowns, adding 477 receiving yards and two extra touchdowns.

But after the season he had, did Hillis starting buying into the curse? Apparently so.

“No doubt about it,” Hillis finally admitted Thursday. “Things haven’t worked to my favor this year. There’s a few things that happened that made me believe in curses. Ain’t no doubt about it.”

With the way his season has gone, it’s hard not to feel the same way. He’s been a victim of nearly every on- and off-field distraction (save for anything illegal, thankfully) there is and has essentially been an afterthought in a disappointing season for the Browns.

Cleveland Browns quarterback Colt McCoy still hasn’t been medically cleared to practice, though he hasn’t been ruled out for<img class="alignright size-medium wp-image-6506" title="QB Colt McCoy still hasn't been cleared to practice, but Pat Shurmur won't rule him out for the season finale against the Pittsburgh Steelers. Regardless, it still doesn’t seem likely that McCoy will be able to take the field no matter how much he would like to do so.

Despite not being cleared to play, McCoy did speak out about his concussion for the first time since it happened on Dec. 8. He praised the Browns medical staff, but didn’t want to get into any details about that game or the symptoms he has been feeling since suffering the concussion:

“I just don’t want to go there guys,” McCoy said. “I really don’t want to recreate anything. I don’t even want to think about it. I can tell you that I’m feeling a lot better – especially of late. I really feel like I’m coming out of this and I hope to at least be able to be out there this weekend and help my team.”

As much as McCoy wants to play, it sure doesn’t seem likely – or even smart – for him to be out there. He also went on to say that he loves Cleveland and wants to be “part of the resurrection of the Browns.”
