It’s Time for the Browns to Welcome Back…Beau Bell?

Under any other circumstances, it might be easy to forget about linebacker Beau Bell. But in 2008, he was the Browns’ first pick of the draft…in the fourth round. In order to get quarterback Brady Quinn and defensive linemen Shaun Rogers and Corey Williams, the Browns had to relinquish all of those top picks.

Bell, for a number of reasons, never panned out in Cleveland and he faded into obscurity…until now.

He will be with 40-plus other players this weekend at an NFL Regional Combine in Berea, looking to make a comeback.

According to Tony Grossi, these combines are for players who:

1. Were not invited to the national combine in Indianapolis

2. Have college experience who were eligible for a previous draft

3. Have some pro playing experience but have been out of the game for a while

With the switch to the 3-4, the Browns need all the help they can get at linebacker. Could we be seeing the vaunted return of Beau Bell in 2013?

I always wondered why he didn’t get more of a chance compared to all those NY Jets retreads Mangini brought in. Back in 2009 preseason I wrote on my blog…

“Beau Bell, LB – He’s been on the bench for a year and now its time to test him. During his last year in college had had over 120 tackles and forced 5 fumbles, so he hits hard and gets to the runner. But he also led the team in interceptions (4), so he can read QBs and has good hands. Just how many LBs in the NFL had 4 INT’s last year? Size and speed are comparable to Ray Lewis. He could start at ILB or be a project MLB. Time to put him in next to DQ and test him.”

Maybe the swicth to a 4-3 doomed him. Maybe what I saw wasn’t what everyone else saw. If he’s been out of the game for a while, then I’m thinking the latter is true.
