Browns vs. Dolphins: Live Game Thread for Week 1

Browns inactives: QB Brian Hoyer, TE MarQueis Gray, OLB Barkevious Mingo, OT Martin Wallace, OG Shawn Lauvao, DT Ahtyba Rubin, OLB Paul Hazel.

Dolphins inactives: QB Pat Devlin, CB Jamar Taylor, RB Mike Gillislee, CB Will Davis, LB Josh Kaddu, G Danny Watkins, G Dallas Thomas

The Browns kickoff the season against the Miami Dolphins with a chance to get off to 1-0 start for the first time in 8 years and the first head coach to start their career with the Browns 1-0 since Bud Carson led the Browns to a 51-0 domination of the Pittsburgh Steelers in 1989.

The calf injury that caused Athyba Rubin to go on the injury report late in the week will keep him out of the gate with Billy Winn getting the opportunity to step in and start.  The other questionable player on the Browns was Buster Skrine who will play through the strained shoulder.  With Barkevious Mingo out and Paul Hazel inactive, Eric Martin is the fourth outside linebacker this week and it will be interesting to see how much run he gets in the rotation.

The Browns finally get to play a game that matters and Trent Richardson will be 100% healthy and ready to run, so if he gets less than 25 touches this game, something went horribly wrong.  With Josh Gordon out, the Browns need a wide receiver to step up and make plays for Brandon Weeden.

Why will the Browns win?  Why will they lose?  Who is the hero or the goat today?  Discuss it all here live during the game.

Jabaal Sheard has to have a big game against Jonathan Martin. No reason he shouldn’t

I’m a Browns fan born and bred and want another championship before I’m dead. The Browns need to run run run and keep jamming that ball down their throats.you’re America’s blue collar team so go out there and play like the blue collar men that built this country. Don’t give up never quit and scrap and fight for every inch. And remember…PITTSBURGH SUCKS!!!!!!

Browns getting a nice push up front right out of the gate.

Cameron Wake is an elite defensive end and just got stoned by a Richardson stiff arm. Expecting to see pictures and gifs of that momentarily

Weeden with back to back forced passes. The second one was just awful. He was getting hit but double coverage. Interception as a result. Richardson is working down the field. Just protect the football

  • Pete Smith

Travis Benjamin with a start he’d like to forget. Browns offense is clunky after some early success. Waste of good field position

Dolphins and Tannehill found a matchup they like… whoever is being covered by Chris Owens

  • Pete Smith

Browns pass rush finally gets to Tannehill and forces an errant throw. Jackson got a hit on Tannehill. Wilcots seems to be blind as Jackson did not hit him in the head. He wrapped him up around the body.

Ball bounces off of Little’s hands and Patterson may have intercepted it but called incomplete on field. Challenged by Dolphins. Reversed on review. Dolphins get the ball in Browns territory and turnovers are killing the Browns. Richardson is the only player on Browns who seems to be playing well one quarter into the season

  • Pete Smith

T.J. Ward questionable to return with a shoulder injury. Safety position suddenly becomes a huge question mark with Josh Aubrey and Tashaun Gipson in there

  • Pete Smith

Desmond Bryant with his first sack as a Brown and the first from the Browns as a team this year. Defense holds and Dolphins will have to go for another field goal. Browns are lucky to only be down 6-0

  • Pete Smith

Oniel Cousins with a pair of inexcusable mistakes thus far.

Quentin Groves able to get a sack. Defense is stepping up while offense flounders

Desmond Bryant gets a coverage sack. His second of the day.

Travis Benjamin gets a mulligan on the punt return and gives the Browns a spark. Will start on the 50. They have to get points out of this even if it is a field goal

bizarre play. Weeden buys time with a Barnidge block. Finds Cameron on a diving catch. Initially called a TD but Cameron was touched down earlier

  • Pete Smith

Another deflected pass results in Weeden’s third interception. Bad placement on the pass. Not sure why Browns did not feed Richardson there

  • Pete Smith

Tipped pass for the Dolphins goes off of D’Qwell Jackson’s outstretched hand right to Tashaun Gipson who makes the interception. Unbelievably, Browns still only down 6-0 with the ball.

  • Pete Smith

Garrett Gilkey is a rookie and incredibly raw but Oniel Cousins is melting down in front of our eyes

  • Pete Smith

After a nice play to Bess and penalty, Cousins gets steamrolled into the backfield by Solai who deflects Weeden’s pass.

  • Pete Smith

Browns playcalling inside the 5 has been far too cute. Give Richardson the ball

  • Pete Smith

Weeden finds Cameron after a long, winding, ugly path to the end zone. Browns, despite everything, in position to take a 7-6 lead into the half.

  • Pete Smith

Browns up 7-6 at half. Cousins warrants being cut before they come back out while Little needs to remove his head from between his legs. Browns have to find a way to make Dolphins take pass seriously enough to open up room for Richardson, who is way, way behind schedule on touches.

  • Pete Smith

T.J. Ward back in the game. Haden drops an interception right in his hands. Dolphins tried to go deep to Mike Wallace after he was not even targeted in first half. That was why. Kruger follows up with his first sack as a Brown and the 4th by the team. Sets up 3rd and 11

  • Pete Smith

Billy Winn goes down with a lower leg injury. With Rubin already hurt, the depth is getting thin in a hurry

  • Pete Smith

Weeden has 3 INTs. Tannehill would if Browns would catch balls hitting DBs in their hands. Ward with a drop on a deep ball

  • Pete Smith

Tannehill takes advantage of second chance and beats Skrine on an out and up double move to Hartline for a touchdown. Dolphins take 13-7 lead

  • Pete Smith

    Browns get 3, down 13-10.

Man that was ugly. Gonna be a lot of drinking tonight in C-town. One bright spot. I was right about Cameron. The guy looked good out there.

  • NickNorthern

Good grief that was a hard game to watch for a Browns fan. Everyone was worried about Weeden turning over the ball. Everyone was worried that our secondary would get burned. It hurts for everyone to be right. It’s only game one, and adjustments will be made, but this loss hurts bad.

  • NickNorthern

Weeden threw 53 times, and Richardson rushed 13 times. I think those stats pretty much tell the whole story.

    • Pete Smith

I was most frustrated they could not find more ways to throw the ball to Richardson.
