The Browns travel to Baltimore to take on the Ravens with a significant amount of importance for both sides.  The winner of the game gets back to even and can try to erase the memories of the first game.  The loser will have an extremely difficult time making the playoffs and are almost guaranteed not to make it after starting out 0-2.  While the Browns are not likely to make the playoffs this year, a win could serve to make sure the Ravens are not either.

Not only does this game have a significant amount of meaning because of the rivalry and the division, but now Paul Kruger is a former Raven, who has a chip on his shoulder from playing only 19 plays during the Super Bowl.  In addition, the Browns are in a position where they have some areas of their team that are as good if not better than the Ravens.

The Browns may not be a contender at this point, but they have a front seven that appear to be legitimately good and something they can count on from week to week and could help shape a defensive identity.  Adding to that will be the debut of rookie Barkevious Mingo, who should only increase the threat of a Browns pass rush that took down Ryan Tannehill four times last week while holding the Dolphins to 20 yards rushing.  Along with a good front seven, the Browns also have Joe Haden, who is coming off of a good game but with one big missed opportunity in the form of a dropped interception.

The challenge for the Browns’ coaching staff is finding ways to get Trent Richardson the football in ways for him to succeed.  They also have to be stubborn and continue feeding him the ball.  That might be in the form of handing him the ball but they also need to find more ways to get him involved in the passing game.

In many ways, the Ravens are a measuring stick game and an opportunity to show how the Browns stack up in the division.  While much of the focus will be on Brandon Weeden and whether he can do enough to lead them to a win, the rest of the roster might be much closer to being a competitive team and be held back by quarterback play.

Both defenses look like they have a significant advantage in this game that suggest yards and points will come at a premium from the offenses, so expect a ridiculous shootout defying all logic.

  • Pete Smith

It appears as the refs did the equivalent of warning both dugouts in baseball after Ray Rice and Phil Taylor got into it. Taylor lucky he only got a personal foul.
Flacco testing both corners early, but Haden and Skrine up to the task with pass deflections

Mingo takes 1 play to get the first sack of his career. Incredible burst off of the edge

  • Pete Smith

In part due to Mingo’s sack, Browns defense makes up for lack of poise by holding Ravens to a long field goal, which they missed.

  • Joe Mazzulo

Welcome to Cleveland Barkevious Mingo! Saved that drive for the defense.

  • Joe Mazzulo

Must look for Trent this deep.

  • Pete Smith

They gotta feed Richardson, but if he can’t run, throw it to him. Incredibly talented as a receiving threat

  • Joe Mazzulo

Agreed, he shouldn’t leave the field.

  • Joe Mazzulo

Wasted timeout, you need to get six on this drive. Send a message.

  • Pete Smith

Getting the play calls in was so smooth in preseason, where it should have been clunkier. Should have less problems in regular season and they have to blow a time out here. Important to get the play right there with opportunity to get a touchdown but needs to be cleaned up

  • Joe Mazzulo

    Disappointing play call, worse execution.

  • Pete Smith

Weeden opted to throw the ball away and protect the possession. Browns get 3, take the lead, but missed opportunity

  • Joe Mazzulo

Nice stop for the defense, win the field position game early and lean on Richardson.

  • Pete Smith

Live by the blitz. Die by the blitz. Ravens are doing a decent job in adjusting to protection, so there are opportunities for Flacco. Fortunately, he is not taking full advantage right now

  • Joe Mazzulo

Need to involve Trent on this drive, screen play or pass to the flats, get him in space and going downhill. I do not have much confidence in the wide receivers to make plays without Gordon.

  • Pete Smith

Gets Richardson the ball in the flat. Moves the chains. Thomas got beat by Suggs there

  • Pete Smith

Browns aren’t reinventing the wheel here to get Richardson the ball. Playing on schedule

  • Joe Mazzulo

    Awful penalty. No excuse.

  • Pete Smith

    Dumb mistakes kill a drive

  • Joe Mazzulo

Sloppy, sloppy start offensively. The Browns move the chains when the feed Richardson, yet they continue to take him out on 3rd down.

  • Pete Smith

Browns able to dig out from starting inside the 5 and get a first down to get some breathing room to end the quarter. Weeden has been solid, able to avoid mistakes. Making decent reads

  • Joe Mazzulo

You can’t stop your route short of the sticks. Bess is a veteran, he knows better.

  • Pete Smith

Browns had fought to get some field position back only to piss it away on bad coverage on the punt return

  • Pete Smith

Browns defense finally gets Flacco. Sheard and Bryant should have had him twice each before finally wrangling him to force the punt

  • Pete Smith

Desmond Bryant has been nothing short of an absolute stud so far

  • Joe Mazzulo

Bryant and Kruger have both been very, very tough. Mingo’s speed can really take this pass rush to an elite level.

  • Pete Smith

Travis Benjamin’s slight frame will always scare me and that body catch is hardly ideal, but hey… they made the play and moved the chains.

  • Pete Smith

It seems like Weeden and the receivers really took the criticism to heart this past week. Weeden taking a little off of his passes and his receivers really working hard for him.

  • Joe Mazzulo

Starting to breach that run defense. Slightly.

  • Joe Mazzulo

Nice play, nice read, nice catch.

  • Pete Smith

Nice drive short circuited by Ravens getting pressure on Weeden with back to back sacks. Second one, Dumvervil just beat Schwartz around the edge and Weeden had no chance. First one more of a coverage sack

  • Joe Mazzulo

Why Ogbonnaya was helping out on the left side is beyond me. The premier pass rusher is matched up one on one with Mitchell Scwartz and you don’t chip him? The Browns asked for that, you need to put your players in a better situation to succeed.

  • Pete Smith

Mingo is ridiculous. All the way up the field and comes back and takes down the screen

  • Joe Mazzulo

Mingo is such a freakish athlete.

  • Joe Mazzulo

Really nice stop defensively. Need to put a drive together and get them more rest.

  • Pete Smith

Getting points before the half would be nice here in addition to pitching first half shutout.
Mingo draws a penalty trying to block the punt. Mingo… he’s fun

  • Joe Mazzulo

Take your time. Feature Richardson, chew up yards and the clock.

  • Pete Smith

Marv, you’re a legend, but that is not a screen

  • Joe Mazzulo

Big third down here. You have to think Bess or Cameron will be targeted.

  • Joe Mazzulo

You need to get it out quick.

  • Pete Smith

Well, at least Weeden didn’t soil himself

  • Joe Mazzulo

    That can’t be confirmed.

  • Joe Mazzulo

    That one hurt.

  • Joe Mazzulo

Just keep them out of the endzone.

  • Pete Smith

Look… I get that they don’t want to back down to the Ravens and all of that, but they have got to find a way to keep their composure. A penalty would have been disastrous there.

  • Pete Smith

Ravens miss another long field goal. Browns should finish the half with a shutout on defense and up 3-0. A little luck going a long way in this game

  • Joe Mazzulo

Browns got lucky there, especially Craig Robertson.

  • Pete Smith

The Browns have often been criticized for being conservative before the half. They are being aggressive here and attacking down the field. Greg Little has looked effective with his catches, but needs to get open more often.

  • Pete Smith

Being able to not only get out without giving points but getting some points to end the half would be a nice boost going into half time.

  • Pete Smith

Browns execute a drive, get in field goal position, and Billy Cundiff makes a 51 yard field goal. Browns up 6-0 and Cundiff doing his damndest to avoid kicker-gate in Cleveland. That was a big drive for the Browns offense and coaching staff
