Browns vs. Ravens: Live Game Thread for Week 2

The Browns travel to Baltimore to take on the Ravens with a significant amount of importance for both sides.  The winner of the game gets back to even and can try to erase the memories of the first game.  The loser will have an extremely difficult time making the playoffs and are almost guaranteed not to make it after starting out 0-2.  While the Browns are not likely to make the playoffs this year, a win could serve to make sure the Ravens are not either.

Not only does this game have a significant amount of meaning because of the rivalry and the division, but now Paul Kruger is a former Raven, who has a chip on his shoulder from playing only 19 plays during the Super Bowl.  In addition, the Browns are in a position where they have some areas of their team that are as good if not better than the Ravens.

The Browns may not be a contender at this point, but they have a front seven that appear to be legitimately good and something they can count on from week to week and could help shape a defensive identity.  Adding to that will be the debut of rookie Barkevious Mingo, who should only increase the threat of a Browns pass rush that took down Ryan Tannehill four times last week while holding the Dolphins to 20 yards rushing.  Along with a good front seven, the Browns also have Joe Haden, who is coming off of a good game but with one big missed opportunity in the form of a dropped interception.

The challenge for the Browns’ coaching staff is finding ways to get Trent Richardson the football in ways for him to succeed.  They also have to be stubborn and continue feeding him the ball.  That might be in the form of handing him the ball but they also need to find more ways to get him involved in the passing game.

In many ways, the Ravens are a measuring stick game and an opportunity to show how the Browns stack up in the division.  While much of the focus will be on Brandon Weeden and whether he can do enough to lead them to a win, the rest of the roster might be much closer to being a competitive team and be held back by quarterback play.

  • Joe Mazzulo

Really nice half overall, nice bounceback so far for Weeden, they need to keep feeding Trent, defense has been huge, and Cundiff might be the most hated man in Baltimore right now.

  • Joe Mazzulo

If he can stay healthy, Barkevious Mingo will be a human highlight reel and strong contender for Defensive Rookie of the Year.

    • Pete Smith

With the way the Browns stop the run, he can really be a star right out of the gate. Can do so much even in a limited role. Should only get better with time.

  • Pete Smith

Stats look better than performance on the field for Weeden. He has made a few nice plays, but also left some plays on the field and a few miscues. Overall, he has managed the game effectively which is a big improvement from last week.

  • Cam

Lead could be larger, but I’m still happy with a 6-0 lead on the Ravens…

    • Pete Smith

Getting that TD on the first drive would have been huge.

  • Joe Mazzulo

Could make a strong statement with a long drive to open the half.

  • Pete Smith

Obviously, as with any game, half time adjustments are huge, but with a low scoring game like this one, they could be more apparent early

  • Pete Smith

Browns and Richardson trying to make a statement here. Getting some nice yardage going outside

  • Joe Mazzulo

    Nice grab right there.

  • Joe Mazzulo

Keep feeding Trent. That defense is beginning to bend, they’ll eventually break.

  • Pete Smith

Greg Little is a strong kid. Would like to see him be in position to get yards after the catch, but a couple catches that moved the chains

    • Joe Mazzulo

Not sure if he has an inability to separate or if he’s simply not targeted when open, but I have been waiting for him to get into the open field since we drafted him.

  • Pete Smith

I like the Browns look from a tight bunch. Lot of options. Weeden is looking less like a statue today with how he is moving outside

  • Pete Smith

That pitch was WAY too lateral

  • Pete Smith

Browns got too cute… just slap it backwards and down it at the 5 if needed. Better than the 20.

  • Joe Mazzulo

Flacco to Smith was near indefensible.

  • Pete Smith

Much like last week, when the Browns pass rush falls off in the second half, they get picked apart. Using run to keep defense honest and then throwing. Mingo needs to come in and make a play

  • Joe Mazzulo

    Nice play by Ward.

  • Joe Mazzulo

Can not give up a touchdown.

  • Pete Smith

Browns’ halftime adjustments on the first drive fell short after a decent drive. Ravens’ did not. 7-6 Ravens

  • Joe Mazzulo

Ravens line has done a real nice job of picking up the blitz. Flacco has made some tough throws and nice reads. Tough to stop a good QB with time.

  • Pete Smith

Good job converting the 3rd down there. Made it look painless.

  • Pete Smith

Huge opportunity missed there by Weeden and Ogbannaya not making that connection. Wow. That hurts.

  • Kyle Quinlan

Weeden has to make that throw

  • Pete Smith

He follows that up by not having any idea where the play clock was. That was pitiful. Compounding a mistake.

  • Pete Smith

Weeden threaded the needle there. Little unable to make a tough catch. There will be plenty of people who just criticize Little for it, but was an incredibly tough pass to catch. Regardless, the Browns tank the drive after another promising start.

  • Kyle Quinlan

Shouldn’t have thrown that IMO that was begging to be picked

    • Pete Smith

      agreed. Incredibly risky throw

  • Kyle Quinlan

Bad effort by Bryant on that play

  • Kyle Quinlan

    Made it up to me

  • Pete Smith

Desmond Bryant with a potentially game changing play

  • Cam

Saying that fumble recovery is huge is an understatement.

  • Cam

Browns need to score on this drive.

  • Pete Smith

If Ogbannaya was going to make a remarkable play, I wish it would have been on that wheel.

  • Pete Smith

While I admire the Browns aggressiveness going for it on 4th down… they ran a route and threw it short, expecting the receiver to make up the difference. They were just short of the mark, but it never should have gotten to that point

  • Cam

Oh my God that ball was so short of the first down. Fractions of inches and it’s Ravens ball…

  • Cam

    Challenge as it should be.

  • Pete Smith

Challenging spots is a tough situation. So often, they will say it is just not definitive and move on.

  • Joe Mazzulo

I feel like you almost have to challenge that, but I don’t think it will get overturned.

    • Pete Smith

He would have gotten killed for it if he did not. Will probably get killed for doing it anyway

  • Pete Smith

Mingo draws the hold. That helps

  • Joe Mazzulo

Really good response by the defense.

  • Pete Smith

Browns defense does a good job. 4th and 21. Punt.

  • Joe Mazzulo

If our offense could do anything we’d be up big right now.

    • Pete Smith

People are going to go back and go CSI on that drive in the red zone

  • Joe Mazzulo

I am certainly not comparing the two, but if Peyton Manning could throw for 7 touchdowns against Baltimore, shouldn’t we be good for at least 1? This is not the 2000 Ravens.

    • Pete Smith

Weeden misses his binky, Josh Gordon.

  • Pete Smith

It’s a 1 point game with plenty of time on the clock. Browns playcalling is pressing like the clock is about to run out. Richardson all but taken out of the game. That is on the coaching staff

  • Joe Mazzulo

Just like last week. The reputation of Norv Turner is far better than what we’ve gotten through two weeks.

  • Pete Smith

Uh oh. Ray Rice may have done something very, very wrong

  • Pete Smith

Mingo comes up with a nice pass deflection. Helps make up for his disastrous whiff on punt coverage

  • Kyle Quinlan

We can’t stop a crossing route to save our lives

  • Pete Smith

Breaking News: The offseason has not happened yet, so the non Haden corners are still not good.

  • Pete Smith

And Skrine is a popular whipping boy, but Owens is worse

  • Pete Smith

    Speaking of Owens

  • Pete Smith

Browns will still be down by only 1 score with almost 9 minutes left. Don’t quit on Richardson
