Cleveland Browns vs. Jacksonville Jaguars Gameday Thread

The Cleveland Browns take on the Jacksonville Jaguars in a game that weighs different takes on approaching the future.  The goal is to win the game in the idea that winning will help this team get better and be more prepared for next year.  The flip side is that losing would improve the Browns’ position in the NFL Draft.  The question is whether Brandon Weeden, Willis McGahee and Chris Ogbannaya leading the Browns to victory means much for the future.

The defense has played well and been taken out of games before it has been able to make an impact with offensive and special teams disaster the past two weeks.  They need to be far more effective when it comes to getting hits on the opposing quarterback and sacks; production which has fallen off of a cliff since the bye week.  In the two games before the bye, the Browns had compiled a total of 11 sacks while the last two weeks, they have secured just one sack total.

Should the Jaguars win, the Jags would improve to 3 wins with a game against the Houston Texans next week.  Conceivably, the Jaguars could ultimately move past the Browns in the draft order if they can win those two games.  While the loss might sting in the short term, it would move the Browns closer to perhaps being in position to land a franchise quarterback.

Win or lose, there will be plenty to talk about with this game.

Browns inactives: QB Jason Campbell, ILB Craig Robertson, ILB Tank Carder, OT Martin Wallace, OG Garrett Gilkey, OT Reid Fragel, NT Ishmaa’ily Kitchen

Jaguars inactives: QB Ricky Stanzi, WR Stephen Burton, RB Justin Forsett, CB Jamell Fleming, G Jacques McClendon, WR Jeremy Ebert, DE Jeremy Mincey

Steve Doerschuk trying to put artificial meaning on this game, which is just absurd

  • Backwoods

Your article is very well said! Today’s battle might well be Pride vs Logic! As much as I want as good of a pick as we can get, I hope we hand it to them. Go Browns!!!

  • Backwoods

    Go get ‘em Buster!!!

  • Pete Smith

Browns get good field position after the return by Jordan Poyer

  • Backwoods

They are looking pretty fired up to start off. I think Weeden will do better than expected. We will soon see.

  • Pete Smith

Weeden wastes no time going deep and hits Josh Gordon down at the 5

  • Backwoods

42 yards on the first pass!!

  • Pete Smith

With Winn in at FB, McGahee gets the rushing TD.

  • Backwoods

    Touchdown Browns!!!

  • Backwoods

I just saw the replay of the long pass setting up the TD. Weeden stood his ground, took a hit, and completed pass. Something we have not seen much from him.

  • Pete Smith

Jags moving the ball down the field pretty effectively.

  • Backwoods

    Yes they are. TD Jags

  • Pete Smith

Jags just executed everything on that drive to draw even 7-7

  • Backwoods

For a game that many say is unwatchable, we might have the beginning of a shootout on our hands

  • Backwoods

I am eager to see how Weeden will handle getting pressured. It seems to be his biggest flaw thus far. Give him time and he does throw a nice ball.

  • Backwoods

    But you can’t fix flustered.

  • Pete Smith

The ship has sailed for me on Weeden. He is playing for a job elsewhere in my opinion. Josh Gordon basically has a JUGs machine throwing him passes at this point

  • Pete Smith

Houston helping the Browns out if they can do their part – up 10-0 on New England

  • Backwoods

Jags are moving it well again

    • Pete Smith

      Sleeping giant

  • Backwoods

I agree with Weeden. He has plenty of talent, but he gets too flustered. We saw an obvious difference there when Hoyer was in.

  • Pete Smith

Josh Gordon is the offense… just need to get him a real QB. Could be unbelievable

  • Backwoods

Gordon is something special! He could use some hands on the opposite side as well.

  • Pete Smith

Weeden reminding people why he is terrible by forcing a pass into triple coverage

  • Pete Smith

    Josh Gordon is too good.

  • Backwoods

    In a word…WOW!

  • Backwoods

I am glad they didn’t take a low trade for Gordon. Issues or not, he is worth the risk.

    • Pete Smith

I would have traded him. If he can keep his head straight, he is an unbelievable receiver, but he has not gone a year since high school without a failed drug test. His track record says he is going to be suspended for a year. That is a huge gamble. The offseason will be extremely concerning with his activity

      • Backwoods

A huge gamble indeed. There comes a time in everyone’s life when they must decide to grow up, or not to. I hope he can keep it together.

  • Pete Smith

Henne tries to go deep to Shorts, underthrows the ball and gets picked off by Haden.

  • Backwoods

Way to go Joe!!! Beautiful interception, not so beautiful throw

  • Backwoods

We must get some help on the O-line or it won’t matter who is at QB next year.

  • Backwoods

What is with Weeden and his flips?

  • Pete Smith

Weeden goes with the underhand flip again. It worked getting the incomplete pass. In his head, he’s thinking “See? It was a good idea.”

    • Backwoods

The worst thing is that your probably right on. Sorry, Brandon, even if it works every so often, that is bad idea for anyone not named Favre

  • Pete Smith

Mingo shows good timing with the pass deflection

  • Pete Smith

Browns are basically down to the two guys on the field at ILB. Down 4 in total. 2 out before the game, 2 out during the game

  • Pete Smith

Weeden forces a terrible pass into coverage which is interceped by Jonathan Cyprien

    • Backwoods

That is the Weeden we remember

  • Pete Smith

Jaguars use a halfback pass to tie this game up, 14-14.

  • Pete Smith

Weeden makes another bad throw that is intercepted and the Jaguars are in business again

    • Backwoods

Maybe he is trying out for Jacksonville next year.

  • Backwoods

Weeden is getting flustered. Gotta get it out quicker. Three turnovers already, and nearly a fourth earlier with the first fumble

  • Pete Smith

Losing sucks, but the Browns NEED to move up the draft board. Weeden helping them do it is not a bad thing.
Texans up 17-14, which would be great if it holds.
Vikings up 7-6, which would be great if it holds.

    • Backwoods

      Go Texans! Go Vikings!

  • Backwoods

Gordon is trying to win it ll by himself

  • Backwoods

Should have been an easy touchdown. I take back what i said about Weeden throwing a pretty ball

  • Backwoods

I’d imagine Flash Gordon saw a few flashes on that hit.

  • Pete Smith

Browns manage to get in the end zone with a touchdown to Little.

  • Pete Smith

Cundiff misses from 53 after the sack by the Jags. The Jags have a big opportunity now with what seems to be no more Gordon today

    • Backwoods

Looks like Gordon might be back.

  • Pete Smith

That safety is both unpredictable and glorious for the Browns. The Jags have the lead, are driving now with a chance to put this game away

  • Pete Smith

Jags get a field goal and go up 25-21.

  • Backwoods

95 yards!!! Touchdown Browns!!! Gordon is sensational.

  • Pete Smith

Gordon rewrites the record book, gives the Browns a 28-25 lead with 4 minutes to go.

  • Backwoods

Back to Back 200+ yard games!!!

  • Backwoods

I will have to verify the stats to be sure, but I believe Gordon is only a few yards away from 500+ in two games.

  • Backwoods

    Jags TD under review.
