According to reports but noted here by Adam Schefter of ESPN, the Cleveland Browns will interview Oakland Raiders quarterbacks coach John DeFilippo for the offensive coordinator spot under Mike Pettine.  Pettine knows the Youngstown, Ohio native from 2009 when both were with the New York Jets.  There, DeFilippo was the assistant quarterbacks coach while Pettine was the defensive coordinator.

DeFilippo has been an offensive coordinator one year and that was in 2011 with San Jose State.  Should they hire the 35 year old DeFilippo, it is a substantial risk due to experience, but fits in with the youth movement under Pettine.

The Browns are also going to interview Kyle Shanahan on Wednesday, who has a substantially larger amount of experience with six years as an offensive coordinator with the Houston Texans and Washington Redskins while being younger than DeFilippo.  Some might call the interview of DeFilippo a courtesy because they are familiar with each other, but thus far, Pettine has been extremely deliberate in how he has hired his coaching staff thus far and has not been afraid to do it his way.

Pettine could have hired Gary Kubiak to be the offensive coordinator if he was willing to basically give up the offense to Kubiak, but Pettine was unwilling to do it.  While many are of the assumption that the front office is heavily involved in these decisions, Pettine seems to have done it exactly the way he wants.
