Browns: Fans opportunity to grade the draft

Cleveland Browns fans, here is your chance to weigh in and grade Ray Farmer and Mike Pettine’s first NFL Draft as it comes to a close.  The Browns took six players in all and acquired a first, fourth, and sixth round pick in the 2015 draft.  Fans clamoring for Johnny Manziel got their wish and the Browns delivered, but they also took an offensive tackle in Joel Bitonio, and a running back in Terrance West on offense.  Defensively, they added two tall, long defensive backs in Justin Gilbert and Pierre Desir and a linebacker in Chris Kirksey.

Are you happy with what they did or does the fact they have not addressed the wide receiver position hurt your overall impression of what the team was able to do?  Weigh in with your grade and comment on how you feel the team did and maybe your expectations for where they go from here.

How do you grade the Browns Draft?

C+ Would Be An Hi B Low A If They Got At Least One WR

  • Josh Hart

B- for now. Has a chance to be an A+ or a D in a couple of years. Time will tell. Depends on Manziel really.

  • Letterman007

They needed a wide out, at least one, and preferably Watkins or Evans as they had the chance and the knowledge of the Gordon situation!! Quite frankly I’m tired of the trading down and into next years draft when we need help now!! If we were the Seahawks or Broncos or not in need of playmakers, then trade! Until then you can’t pass up playmakers when you have a chance to get them! I give it a C- at best!! Did not make optimum use of all the picks you had!!

    • Jarod Cook

I disagree with you. Armed with the Knowledge that Gordon was out for the season, they’ve written this year off. Got a top CB in Gilbert and a depth CB in Desir. Addressed the need of OL with Benito, who is going to probably be starting RT. A RB to add to the stable. And their QB for the future. On top of all that they got a 1st rounder next year, possibly in the top 10.
      I’d give them a B+.
I was traveling the last few days so didn’t see all the trades, so don’t know how they had 11 picks and only ended up with 5 players? All in all good draft. Season was over before it begone, so lets plan for the future.

      • Letterman007

Gotta disagree big time!! They had a chance to get a big time playmaker at#4 in Watkins or Evans and pear Evans with Manziel. But no, even though they knew Gordon was going to miss the season!! The edict from Haslam was win now!! And you could have been set at receiver for a long time!! I would be pissed if I thought that this year is a give up year and I had just been one of the thousands to get season tickets in the last couple days, since they drafted Manziel !! You can’t give up a year for the sake of one player!! If this is their attitude then I’m not sure they are worth following!!

        • Dumb

Just as you can’t give up a year for the sake of one player, you cannot throw your draft away for one as well. Rather than fly off course trying to replace Gordon with a WR from this drat(not possible) they stayed true and filled several holes…kudos to Farmer for making this team better and not allowing one player dictate our rebuild

          • Letterman007

Who says they are throwing the draft away when you have a chance to get a playmaker like Evans or Watkins!? Let me ask, what good does a draft pick do you for next year, when you need playmakers this year? Why is this team constantly trading back and consistently getting double digit losses? Is this defense going to score two or three touchdowns a game? You can’t keep passing on top picks of need !! That is why they are where they are!!

          • Dumb

Did we make the playoffs last year with Gordon having the year he did? We have huge holes that need filled and until then we will always suck. Though I don’t disagree with you regarding trading back, they have to build a team. Our past failures are because we fill one hole and forget the rest. This is the first draft that I can say we did a good job of fixin the team not just a position.

          • Letterman007

No, we didn’t make the playoffs for quite a few years and that’s because of different head coaches wanting ” their ” players just as happened this year again! We are redrafting the same positions every year! Yet there were holes to fill in the wide receiver department and that didn’t get filled, did it!!! A gaping hole that they knew about. The draft is no different than a game. You make adjustments before during and after. We fixed some positions but did we really need two corners? But we really needed a wide receiver !!

        • Jarod Cook

Even if they took Watkins or Evens, rookie WR’s struggle unless they’re paired with a super star. And the Browns just lost their’s for the year. They filled out the defense which I’m happy about, and added a good OL prospect.
They should defiantly sit Manziel this year, and let him develop now that he has no one to throw to. Also so much for giving Hoyer a shot, just proves they never believed in him.

          • Letterman007

But if they had taken Evans, at least there would have been history with Manziel and those two already know each other! Yes they filled some holes, and evidently were not taking a wide out in this draft. A draft where there was a premium of wide receiver talent! Just doesn’t make much sense? The one hope they have is the guy they picked up off the practice squad from, I think Dallas , could be wrong on the team. His name is Johnson and he has size and some speed. He got picked up about mid season and didn’t play because he got hurt !! Whoever they took him from was very unhappy they did!!

      • Craig Barker

You cant fill every position of need in one draft. maybe next year they get a top WR. There are good teams with out great WR’s. Im not trying to say that Im happy about not drafting one but I am happy with the players they picked up. In a perfect world, I would rather have a WR than Manziel.

        • Jarod Cook

Most likely they’ll have 2 top 15 picks next year. So they can look for a WR there. We’ll see what happens to Gordon. Maybe they trade him and get more picks.

          • Letterman007

They had two wide receivers in the top 10 they could have had this year without trading anything and they chose not to take them!! Is that because Pettine wanted a defensive player, being a defensive coach?? God I hope not!! Next year won’t help this team this year!!! There are not many receivers as good as Sammy Watkins or Mike Evans that come out every year!! The experts said Watkins was the best since Megatrone which has been a few years ago, quite a few and this team passed up on he and Evans!!! Can you say DUMB!!!!!

          • Scifibookguy

Justin Blackmon was considered the best WR in his class, and look at where he is now. If Watkins and Evans turn into good NFL WRs, then great, but there is no predicting who will be great.

          • Letterman007

You have to do your do diligence and check out the person in all aspects, including personality and past history. Then hope for the best! Watkins had the one red flag with the drug test in college, but absolutely none since and been a model citizen! As far as Evans goes, I’ve not heard of any troubles!! I doubt there will be any trouble with either, but you can’t be 100% sure.
Blackmon had troubles off and on through his college career. Just like Gordon, you could tell it would be a close call !! But with their talent you take a chance and hope!

  • michael wilcox

Watch the plan play out if Josh out and nate hurt no wide out taken in draft and a whole lot of them did not get drafted…I think ray and Mike got it covered

    • Letterman007

There is a reason they didn’t get drafted, they aren’t that good !! You tell me which one is equal to Gordon!? Which one is equal to Mike Evans or Sammy Watkins that they could have drafted at #4 before they traded back!!

  • Gary

How can anyone think the Browns will be a better team just because they got Manziel.?
You all will be disappointed. He is too short and won’t be able to handle the play in the NFL. He is not the answer to take this team back to the playoffs.
I give the Browns a “D-” this draft. Mostly because they had 11 picks, and only drafted 6 players. They let players like Watkins and Hyde go right by without hesitation. Like we already have better players than both those two. And there was probably at least 10 other very good WR’s we just stood by and did nothing.
Traded away 5 and didn’t pick one WR. With Gordon suspended this year, who do you think will step up to take his place? Little? It’s going to be another disappointing season. Same ole, same ole in Cleveland once again.

    • Aaron

A D-? You are crazy. They addressed all the holes except for WR. This was an amazing draft, top CB, top QB, another first for next year. I say B+ (just because we didnt get a WR). Also dont write JFF off, he hasnt even played one game in the NFL.

      • Jarred Velez

its a D because they couldve EASILY gotten a damn decent corner in the later rounds, like pierre desir

        • Dumb

They did. And got the top corner. And got a 1st rnd next year. And got a nasty OL.

    • Scifibookguy

The Browns had 10 picks, not 11. And no one is saying the team is better just because we got Manziel. We’re better because we got the best CB in the draft, possibly the best QB in the draft, a RT/RG who will most likely start this year, a LB to replace Craig Robertson, a RB compared to Alfred Morris and Ray Rice, and a CB who could be an absolute steal. And if Farmer didn’t draft a WR, it’s because he’s got another plan, one that didn’t include calling you up and asking if it was OK.

      • Gary

Oh, sorry. I guess the Browns only wasted 4 picks. Not 5.
I didn’t say I didn’t like their picks. And yes people are saying the Browns will be better just because they have Manziel. More fans bought tickets after the Browns drafted Manziel. Not because they picked a CB. Their biggest problem last season was a failure to score touchdowns. That problem still isn’t fixed. A couple rb’s isn’t going to fix that.
Did Farmer call “you” to see if not selecting a WR was a good idea?

        • Scifibookguy

I don’t think Manziel will play this year. I think Hoyer will be the starter all season (assuming he doesn’t get hurt again). I’m saying the Browns will be better because of their other picks. They should have a great defense, a pounding running game, and while they won’t have an elite WR, they have several months in which to get a few dependable WRs.

Feel free to be disappointed. I’m looking forward to this season :)

          • Gary

I agree they did have some good picks. Just didn’t address all their needs.
And I hope Hoyer is given the chance to be the starter. You can’t throw another rookie in their only to get killed his first year in the NFL. I will feel a lot better if they do acquire a couple good WR’s. They don’t have the offense to win with just a running game. My disappointment is mostly due to no signing of WR’s. Like I said, I hope they do address that before spring.

  • Jarred Velez

F for being total idiots imo They had prior knowledge of the Gordon problem, Could’ve EASILY got watkins at 4th pick, trade up in front of kansas to get manziel, and IMO should’ve and could’ve drafted Marquise Lee in the 2nd round, and still get a decent corner in Pierre Desir in the later rounds. Although the only Pick I like is Joel Bitonio, the dudes got the toughness perfect for the division the browns are in. Pure stupidity, and I actually believed the browns would turn it around this year disappointed yet again.

    • Scifibookguy

Watkins has already had an incident with pot. Do you think they want another player who might get suspended? And Lee’s MCL worried a lot of teams. In any case, I’m sure Farmer’s got a plan. Fans seem to be forgetting that one player does not make a team good. For all of Gordon’s catches last year, how many games did we win? Ya, four. Seattle won the Super Bowl, and they didn’t have any elite receivers. They did it with great defense and a pounding running game, which is what the Browns now have. The Browns will pick up the WRs they need through free agency, or through UDFAs. Miles Austin will be available as a FA on June 1, I’d like to see them pick him up.

      • Jarred Velez

yeah you got a point now, I didnt think about all that, lol. I do like that they picked up Kenny Shaw in UDFA’s.

  • Craig Barker

I really like what they did. I do not like Manziel pick, however they upgraded a lot of positions. Every one of these picks were thought to have been drafted higher and we filled more positions of need than anyone would have guessed. We could have 4 or 5 starters our of this. I am not to worried about a WR because every day you can trade for a veteran who some team is going to dump and only give up minimal compensation. Just look at Stevie Johnson- I know he isnt a superstar but he shows up against good competition. I really like the CB’s we got, I think all will be able to play at a high level and I am excited to see what the RB can do. I give this draft an A. The only pick I really would have liked to see was LEE in the second rd instead of Bitonio but i think he will be solid.

    • Letterman007

Which one of those tradable receivers has a history like Gordon had last year! Oh yes, I forgot, they are falling off trees as we walk down the street!!

      • Craig Barker

A history like josh gordon you say? Is that the history of being suspended and kicked off teams or the history of one good season in all of organized sports.

        • Letterman007

That’s the history of a player who missed the first two games, had the most yardage in catches for the year, was a Po Bowl selection, and was throw to by two inept lousy quarterbacks out of three!! Can you find one that comes close that we could truthfully trade for!! One another team wants to give up or a UFA!! I think NOT!!!

    • Rene Deschamps

The Browns could have had Stevie Johnson instead of the 4th round pick from Buffalo. Buffalo got a 4th round pick from the 49ers. For a team that needs receivers, this makes no sense.

  • dan

The grade is an A however just like when the Browns traded up to nab Johnny F ahead of Cincy they should have traded up 5 spots to nab Brayant at wide out! Otherwise great draft! Wide out is a huge question mark but it would not be Cleveland otherwise. Hoyer will school Manzel and he will then dominate late in t he season or next year! Go Browns!

    • Letterman007

I’d go with the next year part and how many years are we supposed to wait ? Tell your story and show your A grade to the thousands of people that bought season tickets, when management knew Gordon was in trouble when they drafted Manziel and with held that fact!!

  • Scott

The same people complaining about Gordon are the same people who said we shouldn’t of traded him. I’m not complaining, I think Farmer has a plan either FA or trade even a waiver pick up. I also think that 14/15 season is a tune up for the following year..

  • brian

I think the plan, gordon mess aside, was to fill holes on both sides of the ball, obviously. It seems that they went heavy into the run game for next year given the gordon problem. With a great O-Line, you can adjust the offense, thats what I think they did. Run heavy offense next year. The D will get them the ball and they’ll pound you with the run (wish we had gotten Jeremy hill). The great news in this draft is they now have the foundation of a great defense..great. Watch Gilbertt’s workouts (and film) and tell me any other CB coming is even close. Hell learn really fast given all the attention hell receive. No one throws to Haden as he’s without question the best corner the league has seen in many years. Please don’t tell me about Richard Sherman in comparison, he has better hands, period. Haden beats him in every other category. Gilbert will be excellent. We’ll have the lone bona-fide 2 shut down corner tandem in the league. Coverage sacks will soar, and that D will be the best in the league in 2 years. And Desir may end up being better than Gilbert. So we’ll have great corner play for many years. The Bitonio pic was crucial, Looks like the Mack signing was also Gordon inspired, in retrospect. Johnny F will work incredibly hard and not bail in the pocket sooner than later. He’s the real deal, we just need to protect him. Hell learn the pocket no problem. He’s so smart, and if anyone has more competitiveness I’d like to see him, and so would Nick Saban by the way. He said Manziel has the most he’s ever seen. This team will compete this year without Gordon, and next year, after the draft, we’ll be seen as the most solid young team in the league. A

  • Gary

It’s always “next year” with the Browns.

I was excited to hear we had 11 picks in the draft.

With so many needs, this should have been one of our best drafts in years. Although I did like a couple of the defensive picks, I don’t agree with the Manziel pick. I have always said he is too short for the NFL. Defenses will eat him up. He will most likely lead the league in passes batted down and interceptions. And instead of wasting 5 picks, wouldn’t it have been smart to take a couple WR’s since we really don’t have a good one with Gordon being suspended and another breaking his arm. Letting Watkins slip by was a sign of things to come. Also taking West over Hyde wasn’t a choice I would have made. But, I am not a FO for the Browns. It isn’t my decision. I am just one of the many fans who have to hear “wait till next year” once again.

    • Scifibookguy

FYI, the Browns had 10 picks in the draft. They drafted six players, and picked up three extra draft picks for 2015, which includes a 1st round.
Feel free to wait for next year, I’ll be rooting for the Browns this year :)

  • Rett Darvis

Thought the draft was a huge miss. I’ve watched a lot of tape on Manziel and this is what I’ve concluded:
    -Mediocre to weak arm strength
-Misses his first read and many open receivers
-Has to hold on to the ball much longer because of missed reads
-Relied heavily on Evans to make plays and save poor passes
-Runs way too much and does not keep eyes downfield
-He’s quick but not nearly as fast as RG3, Vick, or Kaepernick
-Not a good locker room guy. Multiple reports of resentment from teammates because he doesnt put in the time for film.

He has bust potential written all over him. I think he may win a few games off his athleticism but he is basically the next tim tebow sideshow. We need to pray Hoyer wins the competition in camp.

On Gilbert this is what i got from film:
    -Great athlete
    -Good ball skills
-Good coverage on deep balls and straight line routes
    -Poor footwork
    -Gets turned around
-Was torched multiple times by wideouts who ran short quicker routes
    -Poor tackler
    -Has big problems shedding blocks

Here is a link to some of his coverage. Tape doesnt lie.

If anyone wants to check out my analysis on Manziel go to draftbreakdown.com.

For our second rounder I wasnt a fan either. The line was a big problem when hoyer was under center. It was more a problem when weeden or campbell were under center because they held on to the ball too long. We should have went with Lee since Gordon will miss some time. In the first round i thought we did well with the trade down but should have drafted Aaron Donald and let Rubin walk next year to save some cap and get a dominant DT. We should have stayed at 26 and take Deone Buchannon. We also wasted quite a few quality picks trading up for Gilbert and Manziel. The front office has not impressed me in their first draft.

  • Scifibookguy

Right now I’m giving the Browns draft a B, only because we don’t know if Manziel will be a boom or a bust. Farmer’s draft gave us a better defense, and a better offensive line and running game. Seems to me that Seattle won the Super Bowl with a great defense, a pounding running game, and no elite receivers. I think Farmer noticed that and drafted appropriately :) Sure, the loss of Gordon hurts, but as Seattle showed, an elite WR isn’t necessary. There are free agent WRs still available, like Miles Austin (available on June 1), and we have no idea if Farmer has already talked to them.

As of Sunday morning after the draft, the UDFA WRs the Browns have picked up are: WR Willie Snead, Ball St.; WR Chandler Jones, San Jose St.; WR Kenny Shaw, FSU; WR Jonathan Krause, Vanderbilt.

    • Gary

So, the browns are going to win this season because they improved their defense?
Or because of their running game? You really think they will out score other teams without dependable WR’s? And I will bet none of those UDFA WR’s will even make the team.
There were plenty of dependable WR’s the browns let go in the draft.
And you think you are a expert and know exactly what Farmer has in mind? And what is Farmers track record? You don’t know any more than the rest of us. We all have our opinions. Like them or not.

      • Scifibookguy

“So, the browns are going to win this season because they improved their defense? Or because of their running game?”

        Both.

“You really think they will out score other teams without dependable WR’s? And I will bet none of those UDFA WR’s will even make the team. There were plenty of dependable WR’s the browns let go in the draft.”

Who said anything about the Browns winning without dependable WRs? Between the Browns current WRs, veteran FAs they can sign, and the UDFAs they’ll be looking at, I’m sure we’ll have some dependable WRs, even if they aren’t elite. And as far as no UDFAs making the team, just look at New England’s Kenbrell Thompkins for an example.

“And you think you are a expert and know exactly what Farmer has in mind? And what is Farmers track record? You don’t know any more than the rest of us. We all have our opinions. Like them or not.”

Yes, but some of us have educated opinions :)

        • Gary

And yours must be the only “educated” opinions.

  • Richard Ciesielski

I think you have to give them a low D. he point draft is you draft your needs. Knowing your star offensive player is going to be out and you not filling your need there was a major choke and total lack of priority. You’ve got an untried running game and you get a runningback, you’ve got 4 QB’s and you get a fifth, AND TRADE UP TO DO ITand down tow WR’s and you get NONE ??? Either we look foolish or are, which is it ? Do you say “Play like a Brown” and wait for a player who decide they want to pretty much flip off the leagues rules? Or do you have a backbone like we did with Bess when he was released? An after its said how do you replace him ? An with the other fellow breaking his arm, that pair right there would say at least get one WR if two are out… Do any of you really think if that info would of been released sooner that season ticket sales would go up ?
I really don’t call what was done being prepared. As a team we struggled last year to get in the red zone, every WR in the draft was FREE FOR THE TAKING and you trade down for a DEFENSIVE PLAYER ?. Even with getting a draft pick for next year its only a good trade if the team you trade with finishes lower then YOU DO.Really think thats going to happen since they traded with us and get pretty much the best reciever in the draft ?
An really, for all the “secretiveness” of the team, everyone and their mother had Manziel going to Cleveland, if anything even with saying “well we herd that Watkins had an issue with pot so we didn’t get him” only gets you off the hook for Watkins. Ask Manziel if he would rather have had a defensive player or Evens.. You know, his own team mate, the number 2 reciever of the draft (who was right there too).
I’ve been a Browns fans for 42 years and I’ve never seen a bigger CHOKE in Browns, or even all of Cleveland sports like I did this draft.

  • Daniel Adam Griffith

Everybody take a deep breath. The season doesn’t start until September… there is plenty of time to pick up some WRs through trade, FA, etc. Does anybody realize how much time and effort is put into preparing for a draft? So, we MIGHT lose ONE player for a undetermined ammount of time. Does that justify going into panic mode and grasping at straws, or should a team stick to their plan? There is a balance between drafting for need and picking the best player available. Also, this is not Norv Turner’s offense anymore…we are not soley dependent on a deep passing attack. We led the league in pass attempts last year and we were close to dead last in rushing. Expect those numbers to flip. We’re building a crushing defense and our offense will be predicated on a hard-nosed run attack. Will our team be worse off without Gordon? Sure! Is it going to be a devestating loss? NO!! As for the draft grade: nobody has crystal ball. Nobody knows if Manziel or anyone else is going to be a breakout player. All anybody can do is to work with the information and the tools they have available at the time. Regarding QB’s…nothing is certain. Tell me this though…which QB in the class has the most potential upside? Which QB most embodies the traits that Pett and Farmer have established as being the identity of the Browns? Heart, passion, hard work? Hint: the answer to both of those questions is Manziel. Every move in FA and the draft have been in concert with this vision. Final note: if anybody were to tell me that after day 1 of the draft, we were going to walk away with the top rated corner, Manziel, and two draft picks (one of which being a first rounder; likely a top-10)….I would have said you are nuts. I grade this a solid A. Time will tell…but this could have been the draft that completely changes the future of the franchise.
