Rex Grossman Makes the Cleveland Browns

Early in the off-season many linked the Cleveland Browns to Rex Grossman. He wasn’t added early on but in the midst of the pre-season schedule the Browns made the move to bring in Sexy Rexy. Both Johnny Manziel and Brian Hoyer have stated how helpful Grossman has been to them since his arrival. Today Connor Shaw was waived. He might make the practice squad (New Window) which meant Grossman was likely to make the 53 man roster. It is now, almost, official:

Mary Kay Cabot tweeted out the same a few minutes later. For Grossman this is a chance to prove his ability to be a veteran support for Manziel and Hoyer as well as possibly play. Grossman’s experience and confidence in the Kyle Shanahan’s system is a huge value for the Browns. The transition to that system has been anything but smooth.

Grossman showed his comfort as he played for the first time with the Browns against the Chicago Bears in the last pre-season game. Grossman looked smooth, was hitting receivers in stride and made smart decisions. He went 4 for 8 for 80 yards in his limited work. If he can help Hoyer and Manziel do the same his salary is well worth it.

It is also possible that the Browns would look at Grossman if Hoyer gets hurt, instead of bringing in Manziel if they don’t feel he is ready. Grossman is far more prepared to pickup the team in the middle of the game than Manziel. Manziel would likely start when given a week to prepare.

Are you happy Grossman made the squad?
