Mike Pettine’s Victory Speech Shows A Simple Leader

The Cleveland Browns will be the talk of the NFL, at least until Sunday. Head Coach Mike Pettine is in the running for Coach of the Year at this time. That, like the playoff talk, is premature but very interesting.

The Browns just posted exclusive video of Pett’s victory speech after the game:

The video shows a simple leader. A man talking to men. No game playing. No trying to be cute. Just a simple leader doing the things that good leaders do.

I didn’t need to, nor expected to, get fired up and motivated to go run through a wall from this speech. Those type of leaders tend to burn bright and fade quickly. For Pettine it is all about his ability to stay himself. His structured, reasoned and consistent approach mirrors what we are seeing on the field from the Browns.

Leadership can come in many forms. Players like Donte Whitner and Joe Haden can gives emotional, passionate speeches. Paul Kruger leads through his relentless pressure to the ball. Brian Hoyer is the quintessential extension of his coach. Unflappable, never changing and steady.

It is Pett’s leadership style that makes me wonder if Johnny Manziel will ever fit on a team coached by him. Manziel is a fiery passionate performer who wears his heart on his sleeve. Nothing wrong with it but could create a scenario where coach and QB don’t see eye to eye.

This video does a great job of showing you who Mike Pettine is and why he is a great leader of men. Even at the end where veteran leader Joe Thomas tries to get the coach to agree to “See you on Wednesday” Pettine stayed consistent “See you Tuesday morning.” Players may not love it but they respect him.

Mike Pettine is a simple leader. The kind of leader that the Cleveland Browns need.
