Kyle Shanahan Speaks Well of RG3

facebooktwitterreddit

Robert Griffin III, RG3, has been benched in Washington and could be looking for another home in the near future. We looked at both sides of whether RG3 could be rebuilt with the Cleveland Browns (New Window) a few days ago.

Interestingly enough Kyle Shanahan was interviewed today and of course Griffin was brought up to Shanny. While we didn’t expect Kyle to trash his former quarterback, who had his best season with Shanahan in Washington. It was interesting that he decided to speak about directly about a player on another NFL team:

It is easy to read into this quote as much as it is easy to blow it off as unimportant. Likely the truth lies somewhere in between. Shanahan, as a coach, realizes that if Griffin can get back to the type of player he was in his rookie season than any coach would want him. Shanny also knows that the personality RG3 can get coaches fired.

Personally it is likely that Kyle has seen both sides of the quarterback. Kyle was likely a sounding board for Griffin when the QB was frustrated with Kyle’s dad, and Washington Head Coach, Mike Shanahan but then turned from the younger Shanahan late in their relationship.

RG3’s relationship with Kyle Shanahan could be important in two different situations. First, the Cleveland Browns could have a cursory interest in bring in Griffin, partially based on his relationship with their offensive coordinator. Second, Shanahan could be in line for a head coaching job as soon as next season. Since bad QB play tends to get a coach fired, Shanahan’s new position could need a new leading man.

If RG3 is available his relationship with Kyle Shanahan could be important with the Browns (if Kyle is the OC), another team (if Kyle becomes HC) or to other teams in the league (who might call Kyle to get a reference). That Shanahan spoke well of Griffin in public could be a sign that they could renew their working relationship in the future. When and where are the unknowns.
