Johnny Manziel Fourth Quarter Play Analysis

facebooktwitterreddit

Normally here at Dawg Pound Daily we give you analysis of big play quarterly as well as summaries for each quarter. We hope it is helpful for those who can’t watch the game and for those processing the game during and after.

Today we switch it up a bit and instead will be analyzing Johnny Manziel. In particular we are going to focus on his decision making and his throws. We will be looking at how he goes through his progressions, decisions in Zone Read situations, accuracy on his throws and how/when he makes the decision to pull the ball down and run.

Quarterly Analysis

1st Quarter    2nd Quarter     3rd Quarter

  • On 3rd and long Bengals with all out blitz. Manziel complete to Taylor Gabriel.
    • Short gain forces another Browns punt.
  • First play of next possession Manziel hits Isaiah Crowell for a short dump off gain.
    • Pumped to Crowell first, let backer close on him for no gain after reception.
    • Decision was fine but since INT in endzone, Manziel seems to be avoiding any throws to receivers covered at all.
    • Accuracy also fine.
  • Quick accurate throw to Andrew Hawkins gets ball near the 1st down.
    • Good throw.
    • Right decision.
    • Hawkins should have gone forward for the first down.
  • On 3rd and short Manziel gets time by back pedaling.
    • Incomplete, thrown behind and floated to Crowell.
    • Close to another INT.
    • Ball thrown off his back foot.
    • Bad decision.
    • Bad throw.
  • One last play as he hits Travis Benjamin on a wide receiver screen.
    • Fine throw/decision.
    • Without that play the Browns would not have had over 100 yards of offense on the game.

Summary

Very little time on the field in the 4th quarter as the Bengals run out most of the clock. The Browns did nothing to keep them off the field. Manziel and the offense went 3 and out, or close to it, far to often. Manziel ends up 9-17 for 71 yards and 2 INTs. He also ran 5 times for 13 yards. He was sacked 3 times and led the offense to 2 passing first downs and 1 rushing first down. The Browns also had 2 first downs due to Bengals penalties.

Manziel Grade

Manziel’s game was bad. He almost threw another INT on his last pass of the game.

Overall Manziel Game Grade

D- Very little positive about this game for Johnny Manziel and the rest of the Browns.
