Jameis Winston’s Issue Keep Him Off Browns Board?

The Cleveland Browns have had to deal with a ton of issues this season. Jameis Winston has had a ton of issues in his college career. Could those issues take Winston off the Browns board?

GM Ray Farmer made it clear yesterday that he would not be opposed to draft a quarterback in the first round this year. While Marcus Mariota, the apple of Farmer’s eye last year, is likely far gone before the Browns pick at #12, there is a chance that Winston could fall to them at that point, or that they could trade up to get the once prized QB of this draft.

Draft day slides of quarterbacks have been common over the last couple of years. Geno Smith, once considered the sure #1 pick, was drafted in the second round. Teddy Bridgewater, again once considered the sure fire #1 pick, was drafted at the end of the first last year. Even the Browns own Johnny Manziel was rumored to be likely selected early last year and fell to them at #22. So a Winston fall, especially down to just #12 would not be surprising.

At the end of last college football season many talked about Winston as if he would be drafted at the top of the draft if he was allowed to come out. As a sophomore he was not eligible but all quarterback needy teams had fans chomping at the bit for him. A big, strong powerful quarterback who can move around a little and led his team to a undefeated season and a national title.

This season was a little different on the field. While the Florida State Seminoles are still undefeated he has thrown 7 more interceptions and 16 less touchdowns. His completion percentage is down 1.5% and all of his QB ratings are down drastically.

But it it not Jameis Winston on the field that could keep him off the Cleveland Browns draft board but his off the field. Winston has had a myriad of issues. Here is a timeline, thanks to Fox Sports, of issues that raise a bunch of red flags about Winston:

  • December 7th 2012 – Accused of rape.
  • July 21st 2013 – Accused of stealing soda.
  • April 29th 2014 – Accused of stealing crab legs.
  • May 20th 2014 – Skips code of conduct hearing at FSU.
  • September 16th 2014 – Jumps on table screaming sexually explicit words. Suspended for game.
  • October 13th 2014 – Accused of selling autographs

Sound like a player that fits the mantra “Play like a Brown”?

Sound like a player, after all the Johnny Manziel issues, the Browns would want to draft and spend time dealing with?

It doesn’t to me either but Mike Pettine and Ray Farmer have talked in the past about how talent gets you more opportunities. Those chances may have run out on Josh Gordon, and the rope might be short with Johnny Manziel and Justin Gilbert, but would they give Winston a fresh start?

After everything that the Cleveland Browns have done this season, and been through off the field, it is unlikely that Jameis Winston is on their draft boards this coming draft. They will never say that, wold kill their bargaining power in draft day trades, and could always decide that his talent is worth the risk at some point in time, maybe that second 1st round pick, but we wouldn’t bet on int.

Do you think the Browns will have Jameis Winston on their board this year or do you think his off the field issues will keep them from drafting him if they get the chance?
