Dual NFL Mock Drafts From CBS Sports

Early in the week seems to be NFL Mock Draft time. We enjoy taking a look at Dane Brugler and Rob Rang of CBS Sports and their Dual NFL Mock Drafts. With two writers on the same network it shows the differences that can be there even for guys who share resources. We also respect the two guys and especially enjoy interacting with Brugler on Twitter.

Time to take a look at their Dual Mock Drafts and what they would mean for the Cleveland Browns:

Dane Brugler’s NFL Mock Draft

"12. Cleveland Browns – WR Kevin White, West VirginiaWho knows how much longer Josh Gordon will last in Cleveland, which is why wide receiver could be a possibility in the first round for the Browns. White is dynamic with the ball in the air, using his tracking ability and strong hands to attack the ball and come down with it."

A player that we expect to be Mocked to Cleveland until after the Combine. The Combine could have a huge impact on White’s stock. Some think he could go ahead of Amari Cooper while a poor Combine could lead to him falling late in the first or early into the second.

For the Browns he is clearly is an upgrade over the non-existent #2 receiver and could replace Josh Gordon a top of their depth chart if Flash is cut or traded. White is a big receiver with a ton of talent. With the success of last year’s receivers many Browns fans have high expectations for receivers in this draft. Expectations might be a bit high.

"19. Cleveland Browns (from BUF) – DL Malcom Brown, TexasCleveland had trouble stopping the run in 2014 and desperately need to address the defensive line this offseason. Brown has a great mix of quickness, power and versatility to be an instant contributor for Mike Pettine’s defense."

Brown, much like Danny Shelton, will be a favorite of this writer in the NFL Draft. Many NFL Mock Drafts will likely agree and Mock them to Cleveland. Brown, with Shelton off the board at #15, is a solid pick that could rise up draft boards. The success of Aaron Donald last year will likely get players like Shelton and Brown drafted high.

Brown would step in quickly as the nose tackle on the defensive line. The run defense was worst in the NFL last season so anyone strong in the middle of the defense will be welcome both in the NFL Draft and in Free Agency. Multiple picks on the defensive line would not be surprising. Now we see how his partner has things going.

Rob Rang’s NFL Mock Draft

"12. Cleveland Browns — Andrus Peat, OT, Stanford: As the only team with two first-round picks, the Browns have a lot of flexibility, including potentially making a good offensive line one of the league’s elite. A star left tackle for the Cardinal, Peat is blessed with remarkable balance and agility for a man of his 6-7, 315-pound dimensions. He would provide an upgrade over Mitchell Schwartz at right tackle and could be groomed to eventually take over for perennial Pro Bowler Joe Thomas."

Another player that ha been connected to the Browns early in the 1st is Peat. Peat was expected to be a Top 5 type pick before the college season began. His size, agility and footwork makes him an almost can’t miss prospect. Whether he has the mean streak most want on the line is another question.

If the Browns pull in Peat they will have one of, if not the, best line in the game. Peat would move Mitchell Schwartz inside to compete with Michael Bowie. The loser of that competition and John Greco would provide the Browns with depth they didn’t have last season. With this kind of line the backs will have a ton of openings and whoever the quarterback is should have time to make plays.

"19. Cleveland Browns (from Buffalo) — Devin Funchess, WR/TE, Michigan: The Browns’ defense and running game have been good enough to make them competitive, but the lack of a top-flight receiver limits the team’s upside and Josh Gordon’s future with the franchise is very much in doubt. The 6-5, 235 pound Funchess would add another dimension to Cleveland’s offense."

Rang goes all offense with his draft for the Browns. Funchess is another player that could rise up the board quickly depending on his Combine. As such a large player can he run the type of speed that teams want on the outside he could go much higher. Should he prove to be slower than expected, especially in change of direction drills, he could fall into the 2nd round. He won’t fall much further based on his size and skill level.

For the Browns Funchess gives them a big player that they are lacking currently outside of Josh Gordon and Jordan Cameron, both of whom who could be gone next season. Funchess would likely play the split tight end role for the Browns. He has the size to block in the run game and would be a terror over the middle of the defense.
