NFL Mock Draft: Miller’s 7 Rounder for Browns Is Interesting

With the Super Bowl over it is fully time to focus on the off-season especially the NFL Draft. Unlike Free Agency, creating NFL Mock Drafts is something that most NFL media have fun doing. (As an aside, creating Mock Drafts from scratch, including writing narratives, are much longer processes than many think.) Many NFL Mock Drafts were posted yesterday and today, we will cover some of the better ones.

We start with Matt “Mr. NFL Draft Scout” Miller and his amazing 7 Round NFL Mock Draft:

"The Pick: Wide Receiver DeVante Parker, LouisvilleThe Cleveland Browns passed on wide receivers in the 2014 draft, and it really came back to haunt them as the rookie receiver class had a historic year and the Browns’ need at the position grew with Josh Gordon suspended. Now, with Gordon facing a year-long suspension, per ESPN.com’s Adam Schefter, general manager Ray Farmer cannot afford to pass on a wide receiver again.DeVante Parker is too-often forgotten in this wide receiver class. He’s 6’3″, 210 pounds and has shown excellent hands in traffic, ability to control his body in the air and on the ground, and the speed to run past defenders at the college level. Parker did miss time in his senior season with a foot injury, but he ended the season on a high note and is NFL-ready from Day 1."

A nice start for the Browns with the big Parker. It will be interesting if he makes it passed the Vikings, who select #11 right above the Browns. Parker was Teddy Bridgewater‘s primary target at Louisville. While many fans are still upset on missing out on Teddy, getting his receiver could be very helpful for Johnny Manziel or whoever is at quarterback next year. Parker’s mesaurables and ball skills seem too good to be true.

"The Pick: Defensive Tackle Eddie Goldman, Florida StateWith their second pick in the first round, this one courtesy of the Sammy Watkins trade in the 2014 draft, the Cleveland Browns can focus on rebuilding a defensive line that’s fallen apart in the past few seasons.Eddie Goldman was one of college football’s most dominant defensive linemen in 2014, beating up offensive linemen with power and speed. He’s a finisher, showing the toughness and mean streak to punish blockers in a one-on-one situation. Goldman is also athletically versatile enough to play in either a 3-4 or 4-3 defense, which makes him all the more valuable to the Browns."

Goldman is an interesting player. Is he big enough to plug the nose for the Browns? We did a Draft Profile (New Window) on him here and see a fit somewhere on the line for the Browns. With these two picks Miller has the Browns addressing their two biggest needs.

"11. Cleveland—OLB Nate Orchard, UtahOrchard dominated at the Senior Bowl and has the size and tools to be a three-down star at outside linebacker."

Miller goes off from where many fans want to see the Browns drafting. With Barkevious Mingo and Paul Kruger coming back and Jabaal Sheard possibly returning, the Browns don’t seem to have a big need at OLB. Here is some information from Dane Brugler on Orchard from the Senior Bowl:

"2015 Senior Bowl: 10 prospects who helped themselves: DE/OLB Nate Orchard, Utah (6-3, 251)…Despite a record-setting senior season at Utah, Orchard wasn’t considered a first-round pick entering the week and was far from being a top-100 lock. But he forced evaluators to take a second look after he routinely flashed during practices, winning with edge speed, long arms and active energy. Orchard has his limitations, but he also uses his bag of tricks to be effective, reinforcing that at times the end result is more important than the process."

Sounds interesting but is he just an athlete who won’t transition to the NFL?

"13. Cleveland—DE Henry Anderson, Stanford"

Again Miller has the Browns addressing more needs on defense, to the dismay of fans I’m sure. Henderson would fit alongside Goldman to upgrade the Browns defensive line quickly. According to Rob Rang of CBS Sports, Anderson has the size to fill that role well:

"STRENGTHS: Despite his imposing build, Anderson is just as likely to be beat opponents with his quickness off the snap as he is power. Anderson varies his pass rush speeds and chops with hands to create space and slip into the backfield. He’s more flexible than he looks and uses his long arms to lasso ball-carriers. Anderson shows good functional strength to lock-out and create a pile."

Interesting again but no help at tight end or offensive line. Maybe that changes going into the 4th round:

"12. Cleveland—G Josue Matias, FSU16. Cleveland—QB Garrett Grayson, CSU"

Here is where fans might get excited. They get a guard that should help the run game while Grayson is the developmental QB that could help the Browns down the road. Grayson might be the highest ranked, off the radar guy. We will do some work on Grayson for a future post.

"11. Cleveland—TE Randall Telfer, USC"

Adding a tight end is a big need, whether through free agency or the draft. Telfer is a big, hulking tight end who could develop as both a pass catcher and blocker for the Browns.

"13. Cleveland—SS James Sample, Louisville"

A long term replacement for Donte Whitner will be necessary in the next few years. Sample could provide just that. He and Parker have a history together at Louisville and providing comfort for rookies is important. The 6’2″ junior safety could be a good long term replacement in the secondary. Good teams plan in advance, the Browns start doing that here.

"26. Cleveland—CB Doran Grant, Ohio State"

Most know the Senior Buckeye corner. Low ceiling, high floor type player that could be great for the Browns secondary. Mike Pettine will always want to bring in more secondary help and Grant could help with that immediately.

"12. Cleveland—WR Kenny Bell, Nebraska"

Another receiver for the Browns, this time a smaller player who has speed, who performed well in a run oriented Nebraska offense.

What do you think about Miller’s NFL Mock Draft for the Browns?
