NFL Combine: Browns Meet with Multiple QBs

The Cleveland Browns biggest hole, need is at the quarterback position. Most (maybe all) agree about that. With the NFL Combine in full force this week a few possible QB targets are nearby. According to reports, mostly directly from the players themselves, the Browns have met with multiple QBs already for informal interviews.

So far we know about Blake Sims and Brett Hundley:

Hundley is an interesting prospect. Last year he was considered a possible high 1st Round pick. He is full of athleticism and size. Some have concerns about his accuracy and ability to play in an NFL system coming out of UCLA. Others see his big arm and live legs as an intriguing option for teams.

Blake Sims was a one year QB at Alabama but is a similar athletic QB. He only measured in at 5’10” at the Combine, which will give plenty of teams concerns about his size. Last year for Bama he threw for over 3,400 yards with 28 TDs and 10 INTs. He also ran for 350 yards. He has good, not great, hand size at 9 3/8″.

Both of those QBs are the type of QBs that would allow the Browns to have the same type of system with Johnny Manziel. Manziel’s unique skillset, though not promised to even be in competition for the job next year, could play a small role in the Browns decision making. Having Manziel, whether starting or as a backup, and a pure drop back passer creates a need for two separate playbooks to capitalize on each’s talent. We saw that last year when Manziel took over for Brian Hoyer.

One QB who fits both a move QB and a pocket QB is Marcus Mariota, whom Browns QB coach Kevin O’Connell has recent history with:

Like a good politician Mariota says he would love to play for the Browns:

Unlike last year, when the Browns didn’t interview a single QB, the team is showing keen interest in the most important position on the field.
