Browns Cap Space Still 3rd Highest in League

The Cleveland Browns cap space has been a bit of a bone of contention for local media and fans. Even after GM Ray Farmer and Jimmy Haslam made it clear that they wouldn’t be big spenders, Cleveland media and fans called for them to spend a ton of money.

Hopes were raised when talk of the Browns having interest in Darrelle Revis. Revis is a unique player for the Browns. They ended up spending a decent chunk of money on Tramon Williams and will always love their cornerbacks. They will not, however, often be big spenders in free agency. Having cap space and draft picks will always be a value to this regime.

The Browns have brought in possible starters in Williams, Dwayne Bowe, Brian Hartline, Randy Starks and Josh McCown. Those signings should help improve the team. That hasn’t kept fans and media from calling for the team to spend more money.

That makes information from this tweet hard for many of them:

The assumption from some is that if you have cap space you should use it. There is no history of recent teams winning free agency and also winning on the field. The Browns, under Farmer and Mike Pettine, have started the process and are in year #2 of putting their team together.

More from Dawg Pound Daily

This year should give fans a good idea of the process that Farmer and Pettine want to see. That may not result in wins on the field but the development that should be seen from the young players should excite many. The third year of the process should be a playoff one.
