Farmer: Johnny Manziel Expected At April 20th Workouts

Johnny Manziel is still reportedly in rehab but, according to a source, the team expects him to be available when workout starts on April 20th. Cleveland Browns GM Ray Farmer is a little more cautious but is still assumes he will be there as well, according to ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler:

"The Cleveland Browns are expecting Johnny Manziel to participate in offseason workouts beginning April 20 after he completes more than two months of treatment, a source told ESPN.com.However, general manager Ray Farmer, while appearing to confirm that plan, emphasized Monday that the final decision rests in the hands of the people handling Manziel’s rehab.“I don’t think it’s in doubt,” Farmer said from the NFL owners meetings in Phoenix when asked whether he thinks Manziel will be back in time for the April 20 workouts. “Again, I’m not the point person in that. So I would defer to those kind of controlling his care and let them decide what that looks likes.”"

Farmer is right to hedge his bets about Manziel’s process. All good clinical treatment is constantly planning for discharge without making specific promises as to when discharge will come. Much like a physical injury, there can be setbacks, unforeseen circumstances or stalled progress at different times in treatment.

Perhaps the best part of Manziel being in rehab for that long would be keeping him away from many temptations of the off-season. If he is in until close to the start of Browns workouts, he would have far less time to be in Vegas or even home around his old bad influences. Some have concerns that his girlfriend is a bad influence based on her social media footprint. They could be right.

For now, the Browns at least feel like they can count on Manziel being at workouts. What he is like following a couple months in rehab, whether he can put in the work ethic needed and whether he has the physical talent required to play in the NFL are questions that will be answered later. Right now, a mentally healthy, sober Manziel is a great thing, for him and the team.
