The Cleveland Browns opted to draft versatile linebacker Scooby Wright with the No. 250 pick in the final round of the 2016 NFL Draft.

The Cleveland Browns selected Arizona’s Philip “Scooby” Wright with their last pick in the 2016 NFL Draft.

Wright started 13 games in his freshman year, totaling 83 tackles, nine of which where for a loss. He wasn’t much of a force for most of the year, however, but once  the opportunity was presented the following season, “little Scooby-Doo”, as his father called him, took full advantage.

The former Wildcat was a defensive stud in his sophomore year in 2014, earning the three largest national awards in the Bronko Nagurski Trophy, Rotary Lombardi Award and Chuck Bednarik Award. Wright also received unanimous All-American honors and was the Pac-12 Defensive Player of the Year. He was top-five among the nation in tackles (164), tackles for loss (31), sacks (15) and forced fumbles (five) that season while playing in 14 games.

Wright, coming off of a sensational sophomore season, faced much adversity in his junior season, which turned out to be his last. The nation’s best defensive player suffered a torn lateral meniscus in his left knee and later experienced a sprained right foot in 2015, which limited him to only three games.

Although he was injured, Wright was able to suit up for the Arizona Wildcats for the New Mexico Bowl against New Mexico and put up 15 tackles, 3.5 for loss and two sacks.

According to Pro Football Focus, Wright may not have a great 40 time, but he knows what to do on the field, especially against the run:

"Scooby Wright is hamstrung by a 40 time over 4.8 seconds, putting him so far below the timing standards NFL teams look for that he ended up in the seventh round. In 2014 — his last fully healthy season — he was the second-highest-graded linebacker in the nation, with a grade higher than any linebacker in this draft class has managed over the past two seasons. He may not be able to run with a TE deep down the field, but he has excellent instincts and will make plays in the run game."

Many experts believe that he still has the talent and emotion to be a true asset to an NFL team, including SEC Columnist Russ Mitchell:

One of the most passionate players in the 2016 draft class, Wright comes with a distinctive motor and top-flight instincts. A natural force on the field, Wright has a knack for timing snaps and was an elite blitzer when he performed at his highest level. An explosive prospect, he can turn into a long-time starter in the NFL if the proper work is put in.

When he heard his name finally called by the Cleveland Browns, Wright took to Twitter to let his fans and followers know where he’s headed:

All together, the Browns added 14 players over the three days of the draft: Wright, Baylor wide receiver Corey Coleman, Oklahoma State defensive end Emmanuel Ogbah, Penn State defensive end Carl Nassib, Auburn offensive tackle Shon Coleman, USC quarterback Cody Kessler, Wisconsin linebacker Joe Schobert, Auburn wide receiver Ricardo Louis, TCU defensive back Derrick Kindred, Princeton tight end Seth DeValve, UCLA wide receiver Jordan Payton, Baylor offensive tackle Spencer Drango, Colorado State wide receiver Rashard Higgins and Louisiana-Monroe defensive back Trey Caldwell.
