Punter Dave Zastudil Placed on Injured Reserve, Out for Season

AUTHOR: Steve DiMatteo | IN: Browns, Injuries, Training Camp | COMMENTS: None Yet

As an Ohio University alum, this pains me to say, but punter Dave Zastudil has been placed on injured reserve as he continues to recover from off-season knee surgery.
Even more disappointing is the fact that Zastudil is a Cleveland native – hailing from Bay Village – who wants nothing more than to play for his hometown team. He is currently in the last year of a five-year contract, meaning the flaring up of his patellar tendon comes at a particularly bad time.
Zastudil was cleared to play at the beginning of training camp, but his knee flared up only a few [...]

LB D’Qwell Jackson to Only Miss 3-8 Weeks with Strained Right Pec

AUTHOR: Steve DiMatteo | IN: Browns, Injuries, Training Camp | COMMENTS: 2 Comments

It could have been a lot worse for Browns linebacker D’Qwell Jackson, who strained his right pectoral muscle earlier this week, considering that he was out for the entire 2009 season after tearing his left pectoral muscle. This time, the strain will not require surgery, and it will only keep Jackson out for 3-8 weeks.
Whatever your opinion is about Jackson, this is good news for the Browns defense. Some find his statistics deceiving, but his presence will add depth to a defense with a little bit of promise. A season-ending injury would have obviously been a big setback, but even [...]

Where Does RB James Davis Fit into the Cleveland Browns’ Plans?

AUTHOR: Steve DiMatteo | IN: Browns, Injuries, Position Battles, Training Camp | COMMENTS: 4 Comments

The running back competition is crowded, but one guy who has seemingly been lost amid the hype of rookie Montario Hardesty (though he is now injured) and newly-acquired Peyton Hillis – not to mention the expectations of Jerome Harrison – is second-year back James Davis. After a stellar preseason in 2009, Davis was poised to be a breakout star and entrench himself as the running back of the future.
A shoulder injury ended his season – after just one game – but it did not stop him from being involved in the team, as Davis explains in this cleveland.com article:
“When I got injured, [...]

Haden In, Hardesty Out (At Least for Now)

AUTHOR: Chris Slocombe | IN: Breaking News, Browns, Contract Talks, Injuries | COMMENTS: None Yet

According to reports, first round selection CB Joe Haden has agreed to terms on a five-year $50 million deal.  The deal, which has $26 million guaranteed as well as a $12 million bonus, means that all the Browns rookie draft picks are now under contract.

In other news, second round pick RB Montario Hardesty will be out “a couple of weeks” after he twisted his knee Thursday.  Hardesty was expected to compete with RB Jerome Harrison for the teams starting running back gig this season.  Though the injury won’t sideline Hardesty long-term, which is good, it certainly gives Harrison “the leg [...]

Brady Quinn Out for Last Two Games, Results in Derek Anderson Sighting

AUTHOR: Steve DiMatteo | IN: Browns, Injuries | COMMENTS: 6 Comments

With a left foot injury suffered late in last Sunday’s win over the Kansas City Chiefs, quarterback Brady Quinn will miss the last two games of the season. That means we all get the luxury of watching Derek Anderson once again this season, this time running a no-huddle offense.
Obviously, time will tell whether or not this leads to any success for Anderson, but the bigger point remains: has Quinn done enough to win the quarterback job next season? If it was between him and Derek Anderson, the question should be a unanimous and resounding yes. But do the Browns consider [...]

The Injuries Mount, Making This an Even More Forgettable Season for Some

AUTHOR: Steve DiMatteo | IN: Browns, Injuries | COMMENTS: 5 Comments

During the Browns’ 16-7 loss to the Cincinnati Bengals on Sunday, both Shaun Rogers and Brodney Pool suffered some particularly devastating injuries. Rogers left the game with a lower left leg and ankle injury during the game and has now been placed on injured reserve, making him miss the rest of the season.  He will be going into surgery to fix the damage and will be replaced by Ahtyba Rubin, the team’s sixth-round pick out of Iowa State in 2008. Defensive end Kenyon Coleman (knee) and linebacker Kamerion Wimbley (knee) were the other defensive starters injured on Sunday.
As for Brodney [...]

Joshua Cribbs Will Play in the 2009 Futility Bowl

AUTHOR: Steve DiMatteo | IN: Browns, Gameday, Injuries, Position Battles | COMMENTS: 1 Comment

If the Browns want to have any hope of winning today, they will need the services of Joshua Cribbs.  In a game like this, a player like Cribbs can single-handedly win the game with his far-reaching influence on the field.  Lucky for Cleveland, he is active and will play after suffering a neck injury last Monday night.
Remember wide receiver Brian Robiskie?  Well, he has been deactivated, along with running back Jerome Harrison.  I guess it doesn’t come as much of a surprise that Robiskie has been deactivated – his situation has been managed terribly since the start of the season.  Harrison [...]

And You Thought It Couldn’t Get Any Worse, Part III…Browns Lose LB D’Qwell Jackson to IR

AUTHOR: Steve DiMatteo | IN: Browns, Injuries | COMMENTS: 2 Comments

No matter what you think about LB D’Qwell Jackson’s talent level in comparison to other NFL linebackers, he is a defensive captain on the Browns and is the team’s best linebacker.  His influence on and off the field no doubt influences a defensive squad that, if nothing else, plays hard with the talent it has.
That being said, it is unfortunate to hear that the Browns have lost Jackson for the season, as he was placed on the IR on Tuesday with a shoulder injury that will require surgery.  The team’s leading tackler injured his shoulder in the second quarter of [...]

Rookie RB James Davis Out for Season

AUTHOR: Steve DiMatteo | IN: Browns, Injuries | COMMENTS: None Yet

The great news surrounding the Cleveland Browns just continues to get better and better (see: “sarcasm”).  This time, the news is that rookie running back James Davis, he of the spectacular preseason, has been placed on injured reserve because of his shoulder injury and will be out the rest of the season.  This stems from the hit he sustained from Antoine Winfield of the Minnesota Vikings during the season opener.
This leaves the Browns frighteningly thin at the position.  With Jamal Lewis unlikely to play against the Bengals, Jerome Harrison is now the starter.  To cope with the loss of Davis, [...]

Rapper Common Makes Fun of Brady Quinn; Lewis and Dawson Statuses Uncertain for Bengals Game

AUTHOR: Steve DiMatteo | IN: Browns, Gameday, Injuries | COMMENTS: 3 Comments

Running back Jamal Lewis and kicker Phil Dawson were both idle in practice today – along with guard Floyd Womack – and their statuses all remain uncertain for Sunday’s game against the Bengals.  Defensive ends Corey Williams and Kenyon Coleman are also injured but managed to practice today.
If Lewis is not able to play, and I’ll sound like a broken record here, it is time for Jerome Harrison and James Davis to step up and carry the load.  Harrison did a pretty good job against the Ravens, rushing for 52 yards on 16 carries.  Keep in mind that the Ravens [...]
