Makes sense, except not at all. (more…)

It is being reported that the Cleveland Browns are ready to part ways with quarterback Jake Delhomme after only one season with the team, a season in which he made $7 million from the Browns and $12.65 from the Carolina Panthers.

Per Adam Schefter of ESPN:

Browns releasing QB Jake Delhomme; he would like to continue playing.

When the Browns do release Delhomme, the current belief is that he could wind up as the backup in Denver with his former coach, John Fox. Delhomme wants to keep playing and the Broncos are looking to trade Kyle Orton.

When this lockout is over, it’s very likely that quarterback Jake Delhomme will no longer be a member of the Cleveland Browns. That experiment, suffice it to say, was a bust, and Delhomme now serves little purpose other than to become a mentor to Colt McCoy.

While that could work, Delhomme’s former team, the Carolina Panthers, look to be a potential suitor for him if and when he is released by the Browns. He would serve a similar role there, mentoring both Cam Newton and Jimmy Clausen.

If Panthers players want to see Delhomme return and the team makes an effort to get him back, it shouldn’t come off as a big deal to Browns fans. While Delhomme has played a big role off the field, McCoy has a good head upon his shoulders and is more than capable of taking the next step as a quarterback. That’s not to say that Delhomme’s influence on him and the rest of the young offense will go unappreciated, though.

Here are some other Browns links on this early Tuesday evening:

Could we be that much closer to a deal finally being reached? (ESPN.com)

Think Jim Tressel wishes he would have taken that job with the Browns back in 2006? (Pro Football Talk)

Joe Thomas ranked as the best left tackle in the game, narrowly beating out Miami Dolphins LT Jake Long (ESPN.com)
