Reggie Hodges’ days in Cleveland could be numbered, as the Browns signed punter Spencer Lanning on Wednesday. Hodges is due to become a free agent on March 12, and it’s very likely that he won’t be returning in 2013.

Hodges, despite landing 29 punts inside the 20-yard line (11th in the NFL), ranked 31st in the NFL with a 37.1-yard net average this past season.

Lanning has bounced around between a number of teams (including the Sacramento Mountain Lions of the UFL and the Browns during last season’s training camp), but he finished his career at South Carolina with a 42.6-yard average, placing 46 punts inside the 20. Even better, he served time as a kicker, making 34 of 44 attempts and converting 80 of 84 PATs.

Also, this serves as your sad reminder that kicker Phil Dawson will likely not be returning to the Browns this season.

A day off from practice allowed the Cleveland Browns players to regroup and the front office to find a replacement punter for the injured Reggie Hodges, who will miss the entire season with a torn Achilles.

The team has found his replacement for the time being – Richmond Mcgee, who has spent time with both the Philadelphia Eagles and Chicago Bears. He was waived by the Bears on Monday and tried out for the Browns on Wednesday, getting the nod as the Browns’ punter – for now. That means job security won’t exactly be extended over to him with pleasure, as the Browns will continue to be on the lookout for other options.

The Browns also signed undrafted free agent linebackers Archie Donald and Eric Gordon, while waiving rookie linebackers Derrick Addai and Alex Wujciak. Hodges was also placed on injured reserve.

Browns Punter Reggie Hodges Out for Season With Torn Achilles

It was reported earlier today that Cleveland Browns punter Reggie Hodges left practice early after sustaining a leg injury. It was not known initially how serious the injury was, but now we do know, and the news isn’t good: Hodges will miss the 2011 season with a torn Achilles tendon.

Originally filling in for an injured Dave Zastudil two seasons ago, the Browns elected to keep Hodges going into last season. In 2010, he averaged 43.9 yards per kick, with 29 punts downed inside the 20-yard line and 15 inside the 10. Additionally, he was the holder on placekicks.
