Let’s Not Lose Our Minds Over Cam Newton

Team president Mike Holmgren has said that the Cleveland Browns are taking a look at quarterback Cam Newton by setting up a private workout with the former Auburn star. As you may or may not know, the Browns are sitting pretty with the sixth overall pick in next month’s draft, which means there will be a plethora of options to choose from.

But to take a quarterback that early? After all, didn’t the team essentially hand the keys over to Colt McCoy? And don’t the Browns have more important needs at so many other positions?

Despite “looking hard” at Newton and not ruling him out with the sixth pick, there is no reason Browns fans should worry about the team passing up a wide receiver or defensive lineman to take a quarterback with a lot of room for improvement. First off, Holmgren is known for scouting plenty of quarterbacks and drafting them, even when there was hardly a reason to do so, thinking back to his years in Green Bay.

Secondly, these types of stories are found among every team’s draft preparations each and every year. There’s no harm in giving Newton a look, and it satisfies the necessary smoke and mirrors tactics that make the draft so compelling. It’s important to keep the Browns’ draft plans a mystery, and an “interest” in Newton might compel a team to make a trade for that sixth pick. Whether or not it happens doesn’t matter because the Browns are in a beneficial situation regardless.

Cam Newton won’t be drafted by the Cleveland Browns, but it wouldn’t surprise me to see them take a quarterback in the later rounds, just for fun. If he is, however, taken with the sixth overall pick, it also wouldn’t surprise me to see various signs of the impending apocalypse soon after.
