The Cleveland Browns signed Paul McQuistan to provide depth on the offensive line. He started one game for the Browns at center, when Alex Mack got hurt, and quickly showed that he was not going to provide the kind of help the team had hoped.

Instead today the team cut McQuistan:

Not shocking. McQuistan looked a lot like O’Neil Cousins, who Browns fans saw plenty of, and not in a good way, in the past. While some don’t think Mitchell Schwartz is a high level player but compared to McQuistan he looks like an All Pro.

The Browns still have a need for at least depth on the offensive line. The team has confidence in Michael Bowie coming back from injury and have shown confidence in both Schwartz and John Greco as well.

The Browns could draft an offensive lineman high in the draft. There are quite a few that could fit well at right tackle in the first two rounds if they see the position as that important. Last year they spent a 2nd round pick on Joel Bitonio and that worked out well for the team. Maybe they go to the well once again.

Free agency also has some interesting options with Mike Iupati, Bryan Bulaga and others.  Jimmy Haslam said that the Browns would not be big players in free agency, but maybe that was just a smoke screen. If it wasn’t the Browns might go on the cheap again. Last year that brought in McQuistan and we see how that ended.

Are you surprised that Paul McQuistan was the Browns first off-season cut?
