Final. 13. 45. 27. 53

The Browns made their first trip to Denver’s Mile High Stadium for the season-ending game in 1970, which also was the final game for head coach Blanton Collier, to this day the last Cleveland coach to win an NFL title.

Despite knowing at kickoff that they playoff hopes were over, thanks to an earlier win by the Cincinnati Bengals against the Boston Patriots, the Browns built a 27-6 lead in the third quarter behind touchdowns passes by Bill Nelsen to Homer Jones and Bo Scott.

Believing the victory was assured, Collier replaced Nelsen with rookie quarterback Mike Phipps in the fourth quarter. But Phipps, wasting no time in showing the Browns what they had received for trading Hall of Fame wide receiver Paul Warfield, threw two interceptions (on just three pass attempts) and lost a fumble, allowing the Broncos to pull within two scores.

Defensive back Ben Davis sealed the win, however with a late interception, giving the Browns a .500 record on the season and sending Collier off into retirement with a victory.
