Recalling the Cleveland Browns 5 wins against the Denver Broncos
By Thomas Moore
The Browns returned to Mile High Stadium on Halloween weekend in 1972 for a comeback win over the Broncos.
Trailing by a touchdown in the third quarter, Cleveland cut the lead to four on a 57-yard field goal by Don Cockroft, a career best and, at the time, the second-longest field goal in NFL history.
The Browns took the lead in the fourth quarter when Mike Phipps hit Paul Staroba with a 19-yard touchdown pass, the only touchdown reception of Staroba’s two-year career.
The Broncos came back to tie the score at 20, but Phipps led a 74-yard drive, scoring the go-ahead touchdown on a one-yard run with just under three minutes remaining in the game.
Once again Denver’s final drive was stopped by an interception, this time by rookie safety Thom Darden, who’s first career interception secured the win for Cleveland in what would be the Browns last win in Denver for 18 years.
