Defensively, the Browns line up with five defenders on the line of scrimmage. Outside linebackers Nate Orchard and Armonty Bryant are on the line of scrimmage, giving the Browns seven defenders in the box. Pre-snap, safety Donte Whitner drops down into the box and is lined up as a linebacker, giving the Browns eight defenders in the box and the numbers to stop the run.

However, on the play the Rams run an outside power to the right. The end on that side of the field, rookie Nate Orchard, is blocked and unable to successfully set the edge and force the run back inside where Browns defenders are crashing down. Gurley is able to get to the outside and reaches the second level of the Browns defense.

Whitner over pursues Gurley and gets blocked out of the play, giving Gurley a cutback lane to run through and he explodes into the final layer of the Browns defense on his way for a touchdown.
