2015 Cleveland Browns roster analysis: The quarterbacks
Austin Davis
Age: 26
Experience: 3 years
Contract status: Free agent in 2018
The Browns signed Davis prior to the start of the season. The St. Louis Rams released Davis following preseason. Davis took the Browns third-string quarterback role following the season ending injury to second year quarterback Connor Shaw. The coaching staff was impressed with Davis and the way he approached the game and signed him to a two-year contact extension.
Davis relieved the injured Josh McCown on Monday Night Football against the Baltimore Ravens and threw a crucial late game touchdown. Davis then started against Cincinnati and the Pittsburgh Steelers where the offense failed to score an offensive touchdown. Davis struggled mightily in both starts but it wasn’t because of a lack of preparation. For coming into the system without a training camp or preseason, Davis was prepared and had a good understanding of the Browns offensive schemes.
2016 Season Outlook: With the contract extension it would be expected Davis enters the season in competition to fight for the third quarterback job with Connor Shaw.
Connor Shaw
Age: 24
Experience: 1 year
Contract status: Free agent in 2017
Shaw was in line to be the Browns third string quarterback after impressing the Browns with his work ethic and toughness shown since joining the team in 2014. However, Shaw broke his thumb in the preseason and was forced to miss the entire season.
2016 Outlook:
Shaw is under contract and it will be interesting to see how the new coaching staff under new head coach Hue Jackson views Shaw and Austin Davis in terms of future plans of the team.
