Cleveland Browns 2015 Roster Analysis: Defensive backs
Justin Gilbert
Age: 24
Experience: 2 years
Contract status: Free agent 2018
Some thought the lights would come on for Justin Gilbert in 2015 after a frustrating rookie season. However, this was not the case as Gilbert played just 49 defensive snaps for the Browns during the 2015 season. As the season went along, reports surfaced of Gilbert being disengaged from the team and having no work ethic.
Gilbert was regarded as one of the top corners in the 2014 draft class, being praised for his athletic ability and man-to-man coverage skills. However, Gilbert is another player that has battled off-field issues and cannot find a way to get onto the field and make any sort of positive contribution to the defense.
In addition to his limited time on the field for the defense, Gilbert also served as the Browns kick returner for a few games, and was only active for nine games.
2016 Outlook:
Gilbert will enter the season as a huge mystery. It is unknown if deeper issues lie with Gilbert and what head coach Hue Jackson and defensive coordinator Ray Horton will think of the former top 10 draft selection. If the new staff can refocus Gilbert, they may be able to channel some of his talent and get some sort of contribution from him. Any sort of positive production would be a win at this point.
