Chris Jones, Defensive Tackle, Mississippi State

Jones would be a perfect scheme fit to play the 5-technique in Ray Horton’s defensive scheme. Jones finished his career at Mississippi State with 102 tackles, 18 tackles for loss and 8.5 sacks in his three-year career. Jones will be highly coveted by NFL teams with his quickness off the snap and his elite strength. At 6-6, 310 pounds, Jones is the ideal size for defensive tackle in the 3-4 scheme.

Jones will be able to collapse the pocket and generate a solid pass rush with a great blend of quickness, size and body control. Jones is considered a raw talent in which he needs work on technique and keeping consistent production.

However, Jones is a perfect fit for the 3-4 defense, and would be a perfect scheme fit along Horton’s defensive front along with Desmond Bryant and Danny Shelton at nose tackle.

Mike Renner of Pro Football Focus, loved the potential Jones flashed this past season. Pro Football Focus gave Jones’ a 13.6 pass rushing productivity grade which was easily the highest in the class only behind Oregon’s DeForest Buckner.

Jones is a raw prospect, but flashes the potential of an elite defensive lineman. Cleveland needs to address the front seven and be an ideal scheme fit. With some coaching and live game experience, Cleveland could get a huge steal in getting a top defender in the beginning of the second round.
