There has never been a more surprising season for the Cleveland Browns since their return in 1999 than what occurred in 2007.

And the surprises began during a home game in Week 2 against the Cincinnati Bengals.

The Browns were coming off an opening-week loss to the Pittsburgh Steelers that led the team to trade starting quarterback Charlie Frye in midweek. But before 72,801 fans, the Browns showed that they were not ready to give up so quickly on the season.

More from Dawg Pound Daily

Jamal Lewis carried the ball 28 times for 216 yards, including a 66-yard touchdown run in the third quarter, as the Browns outlasted the Bengals, 51-45. Lewis’ rushing totals helped the Browns roll up 554 yards of total offense, the most by a Cleveland offense in 21 years.

Lewis, who was in his first season with the Browns after spending six seasons with the Baltimore Ravens, would surpass 100 rushing yards four other times that season along the way to rushing for 1,304 yards and nine touchdowns.

The season would end in disappointment, of course, as the Browns would miss out on the playoffs on tiebreakers despite a 10-6 record.

It would also prove to be the highpoint of Lewis’ time in Cleveland. Even though he rushed for 1,000 yards again in 2008, his per carry average dropped to 3.6 yards per carry and he only appeared in nine games in the 2009 season, the final year of his career.
