Cleveland Browns: Top 10 rushing games of all time (Part 2)
By Thomas Moore
The Cleveland Browns welcomed their largest home crowd in four years for a November game in 1957 and they treated the fans to a record-setting day.
In just his ninth NFL game, rookie Jim Brown set an NFL record (at the time) with 237 rushing yards against the Los Angeles Rams. Brown also found the end zone four times on the day – on a 69-yard run, a pair of one-yard runs and a three-yard run – to help the Browns rally to defeat the Rams, 45-31.
Brown’s record-setting day was part of an offensive explosion that saw the Browns rush for 330 yards and almost six yards per carry against the team that used to call Cleveland home.
Brown would finish his rookie season as the league’s leading rusher with 942 yards – one of only two times in his career he failed to break 1,000 rushing yards – and would take home both the Rookie of the Year and Most Valuable Player awards at the conclusion of the year.
His big day would also stand as a franchise record for 52 years before it was broken by the most unlikely of running backs.
