Cleveland Browns: Which defensive rookies will make the team?
By Joel W. Cade
Trey Caldwell is the great unknown in the draft. He played his college ball at the University of Louisiana-Monroe. The Louisiana-Monroe Warhawks were 2-11 last season, defeating only New Mexico State and Nicholls State.
Trey Caldwell was chosen with the No. 36 pick of the fifth round. He fits the mold of a nickel corner. He stands at 5-foot-9 and runs a 4.51 40-yard dash. He can tackle in space and plays aggressive at the line of scrimmage. His biggest asset is his acceleration. He posted a great 1.50 10-yard split (the time it takes to run first 10 yards of the 40-yard dash). Having a good 10-yard split demonstrates that Caldwell has good “football speed”. He can explode in and out of breaks and quickly change directions. These are essential traits of a nickel cornerback.
Trey Caldwell was most likely drafted to play nickel corner in Ray Horton’s system. He has the quickness and football speed to succeed in the NFL. He faces stiff competition from an already full cornerback room to make the team.
Verdict: Trey Caldwell settles in on the practice squad. He has too much to learn against an already competitive cornerback room.
