1. Michael Vick

While Michael Vick‘s lengthy NFL career is marred by his history of violating the league’s personal conduct policy, a mistake during Vick’s career which sidelined him for two seasons, Vick has put together a productive career. On each side of Vick’s infamous mishap is some solid football, both with the Atlanta Falcons and the Philadelphia Eagles. While in Atlanta, Vick was a rare mobile quarterback who made a name for himself due to his ability to move outside of the pocket.

Since 2013, the 36-year-old’s career has slowed down a bit, as he has spent the last two seasons backing up quarterbacks in New York and Pittsburgh. Now, as a free agent, it is possible that Vick would consider returning to the league in a temporary role much like the one Cleveland has opened up due to Griffin’s injury.

Vick would likely be the best free agent option for Cleveland at this point, as he has valuable experience to share with the rookie Kessler. If the need were to come, and Vick would have to play, he would quickly get the hang of Cleveland’s offense due to the fact that he has been around several different offensive schemes and has understood and excelled in each one. The Browns’ offense is similar to Philadelphia’s when Vick started in 2011, winning seven games out of his thirteen starts.

The hope and assumption is that whoever the Browns sign through free agency or trade to fill their third-string quarterback role will not need to take a snap in 2016. But given Cleveland’s recent history, this can’t be a certainty. Ideally, the Browns would take a quarterback with experience, and one who would not become a distraction or liability in any way. Vick seems to fit these desirable traits best, though Cleveland’s options remain fairly wide open.
