On third-and-10 from the Ravens’ 31-yard line on the opening drive of the game, Josh McCown connected with Corey Coleman on a long touchdown score to give the Browns the early momentum.

On the play, the Browns line up in shotgun with two receivers and Barnidge the tight end to the right, with Corey Coleman isolated as the sole receiver on the left side of the formation. Pre-snap, the Ravens line up with two high safeties but bring one down into the box shifting to a one high safety look. McCown recognizes this changes the protection for the line.

On the snap, Coleman is McCown’s primary read and wants to take a chance for a big play on third down. Coleman has one-on-one coverage with Ravens corner Shareece Wright. Coleman uses an outside release, baiting Wright into thinking he is just running outside vertically. However, Coleman quickly reroutes back to the inside to gain leverage on Wright. Coleman now has him beat and can use his speed to separate vertically on the “go” route.

McCown does a decent job of freezing the lone high safety before delivering to Coleman. However, McCown delivers the throw late almost leading Coleman out of the back of the end zone. Coleman does a fantastic job of securing the catch and dragging both feet in the back of the end zone.

It was a great play call by Hue Jackson to exploit the one-on-one coverage on Coleman and great recognition by McCown. The only think McCown could have done better is throw on time making it an easier play for Coleman and not allowing the safety to almost recover and make a play on the ball.

Coleman’s first NFL score was a great sign of what is to come with the first round investment in the him. He displayed superb ability to win in man coverage and stretch secondaries vertically.
