There has been a lot of positive buzz coming out of Berea regarding the final right tackle candidate, Shon Coleman. Coleman was a third-round pick of the current Browns front office. Being the pick of the current regime may go a long way to helping him win the position in camp. Coleman’s success as a player will be a feather in the cap of the current regime.

Coleman spent part of last season recovering from an MCL sprain. He made his debut as a regular player in the second half of the Week 17 game against Pittsburgh. During that game, Coleman flashed signs of brilliance. But he also showed that he was a rookie who had a lot to learn.

His run blocking was excellent. He had a vicious block on Isaiah Crowell‘s long run in that game. On other plays, he failed to use leverage to gain movement off the line of scrimmage. Pass blocking was a struggle for him as he did not have the initial quickness off the line of scrimmage to handle the speed rush of the Steelers’ defense. Fortunately for all involved, the Browns did not pass much in the second half of that game.

Coleman has potential to a good starting tackle in the NFL. He needs to improve to win the starting right tackle position coming out of camp.

Verdict: Coleman has a real chance to win the position. If he does, it will be a “learn on the job” experience.
