Cleveland Browns: Keys to victory against Bengals
Field position
An often forgotten aspect of the game which will be critical in this matchup is the field position battle. While always important, a team like the Browns with an inexperienced offense and an aggressive defense especially benefits from tilting field position in their favor. In past weeks, they have not been able to do this, especially in the first half last week.
Gaining an edge in field position is often due to special teams play, but it is also a product of strong situational football. The Browns must find ways to get off the field on third down, and convert offensively when backed up.
This, coupled with solid kick and punt return coverage will lead to a shift in field position which will automatically give the Browns a major edge, especially in a game in which points figure to be precious.
Sometimes, it is as simple as taking a knee in the end zone on a kickoff to bring the ball out to the 25-yard-line instead of trying to force a return that just isn’t there. At other times, it’s making a key block to give Jabrill Peppers some room.
