Cleveland Browns: Biggest mistake of the 2018 offseason

The Cleveland Browns have gone through a complete facelift this offseason, overhauling the front office and a good portion of the roster. And while the organization has been praised by fans and media alike, they still have made a few mistakes this offseason.

Dawg Pound Daily’s very own editor, Randy Gurzi, breaks down the biggest mistake for all 32 NFL teams in his latest article for NFL Spin Zone, titled “NFL 2018: Biggest offseason mistake for each team.”

While many would still say that drafting quarterback Baker Mayfield with the first overall pick, Gurzi goes with the team’s decision to pass on edge rusher Harold Landry with pick No. 33. The team picked Austin Corbett out of Nevada, an offensive line prospect that isn’t expected to see the field this season.

Many would say that if the team wanted an edge rusher, they should have drafted Bradley Chubb out of North Carolina State. Gurzi states in his article that even though he was the best prospect on the board with the fourth pick, the team’s selection of cornerback Denzel Ward was an appropriate pick due to the team’s need at the position.

He goes on to further say that had  the team drafted Landry, it would negate any arguments that they didn’t address depth at the edge rushing position. Drafting the Boston College defensive end would have helped the defense greatly, and also add

"“great depth, which is needed considering how often both Ogbah and Garrett were sidelined last year.” — Gurzi, NFL Spin Zone"

The biggest reason that this is the biggest mistake of the Brown’s offseason thus far is explained best in the article:

"“Instead they now have three picks in the first two rounds that won’t have big roles. Baker Mayfield is behind Tyrod Taylor, Corbett behind Joel Bitonio and Kevin Zeitler and No. 35 pick Nick Chubb is behind Carlos Hyde and Duke Johnson.” —Gurzi, NFL Spin Zone"

Harold Landry was probably the most NFL ready pass rusher in the 2018 draft class behind Chubb, and him falling to the second round could have been a steal for the Browns front office.

If Corbett can exceed expectations and have a better career in the longrun over Landry, then we will have to give general manager John Dorsey and his staff credit in the end.
