4. Picking up Jarvis Landry

Another trade this offseason that generated a lot of discussion was the trade for wide receiver Jarvis Landry. Like the aforementioned Taylor, Landry was obtained for a fair price via trade. The Miami Dolphins were willing to part with him for just a fourth-round pick this season and a future seventh-round pick.

That’s nothing for a guy who led the NFL with 112 receptions in 2017. The reason for the Dolphins to want to deal him though made sense. They weren’t ready to give him an extension, which the Browns had no problem doing. Before playing a snap for them he was given a five-year $75.5 million contract.

The second issue with Landry is his low yards per catch in 2017. Despite leading the NFL in receptions, he had just 987 yards and averaged only 8.8 yards per reception. That calls into question the Browns giving him the big extension, but his close-to-the line style of play may not be all that bad.

With Taylor learning a new system and the offense eventually being turned over to Baker Mayfield, having a slot receiver with sure hands nearby is a positive thing. Landry will be relied upon heavily by the Browns quarterbacks and bringing him in was a wise move by general manager John Dorsey.
