Cleveland Browns: 3 reasons why starting Greg Robinson makes sense
By Joel W. Cade
Reason 2: The move increased depth in the interior
One of the glaring concerns for the Browns offensive line after their first preseason game was depth. The interior line of Corbett, Austin Reiter and Spencer Drango did not perform well. Corbett played the best of the three.
Of course, Corbett was the starting left guard for that game. When other starters left the game, he stayed in for extra repetitions. The fact that the starting left guard was struggling against the two’s and three’s is a cause for concern.
Drango also started against the Giants. He started due to Kevin Zeitler’s calf injury. Drango is expected to be a backup swing guard. His play was typical of what the Browns have seen from him over the past two years.
Reiter’s struggles were a bit of a surprise given his level of play in the past. He should be able to bounce-back next week against the Buffalo Bills. If not, interior depth will be a major cause for concern.
Moving Robinson to left tackle and shifting Bitonio back to left guard allows Corbett to be the backup swing guard and center. Corbett played center in the senior bowl heading into the draft. He could eventually become a long-term option there. He can also be the swing backup guard where he can learn the position as he transitions from left tackle to interior lineman.
Starting Robinson at left tackle will immediately provide depth for the interior offensive line.
