Three Cleveland Browns that could be surprise cuts
By Dan Justik
WR Jeff Janis
One of the Browns’ off-season acquisitions, Jeff Janis has a good relationship with Cleveland Browns assistant general manager Eliot Wolf. Janis joined the Packers during Wolf’s time in Green Bay’s personnel department. Janis then followed Wolf to Cleveland this off-season.
Although making some plays at wide receiver during his four-year career, Janis more known for his special teams prowess.
But Janis is in the middle of talented young wide receiver room that even his strengths on special teams may not help. There are four receivers that seem like virtual locks to make the final 53-man roster: Josh Gordon, Jarvis Landry, Antonio Callaway, and Rashard Higgins. The two receivers at the bottom of the depth chart are Janis and rookie Damion Ratley.
Ratley has been impressive during training camp and could have played himself onto the 53-man roster. With the potential that Ratley has, the organization may not want to risk losing Ratley to waivers trying to get him on the practice squad. If the Browns decide to carry only five receivers, Janis’ roster spot could be in a lot of trouble.
The best chance that Janis has at staying on the roster is if the Browns decide to carry six receivers. And that is if the Browns do not make any additions to the wide receiver room, such as Dez Bryant.
Janis’ relationship with Wolf could help his spot on the roster. But the emergence of Ratley has created a lot of questions about where Janis stands on the roster.
