Wide Receiver Jeff Janis

Known as a special teams standout and having good relationships with the men in the front office, Jeff Janis was thought to have a good shot at making the final 53-man roster. There has been a trend over the years that team’s will use a couple roster spots in order to keep their good special teams players on the roster.

Janis is a very good special teams player, and can be used as a big bodied receiver to create some plays on offense. But despite his special teams prowess, Janis’ roster spot with the Browns could be in some trouble. Mostly because of the emergence of rookie wide receiver Damion Ratley.

Even with Josh Gordon and Antonio Callaway not playing against the Eagles, Janis played very few snaps at wide receiver. Although he signed his contract because of his play on special teams, it would be expected that the coaching staff would want him to get work at wide receiver in the team’s dress rehearsal.

The Browns will probably keep six wide receivers on the final roster, but with some young, unexpected receivers emerging, it has created a big question mark around Janis.

His presence on the roster bubble is more so because of the play of other receivers and not necessarily because Janis has struggled. His good relationship with assistant general manager Eliot Wolf could help his case to stay on the roster, but Janis is likely on the roster bubble heading into the final week of the preseason.
