Damarious Randall

With the amount of injuries to the Browns cornerback position, it has forced Damarious Randall to move from free safety to cornerback. That has put Briean Boddy-Calhoun into the starting lineup as the starting free safety.

Randall played most of his snaps last week at cornerback, and he primarily shadowed Buccaneers wide receiver Mike Evans. Despite an admirable effort from Randall, Evans dominated the match-up. Evans’ performance led some to wonder if Randall will be moved back to safety and Boddy-Calhoun back to cornerback.

However, the main reason why Boddy-Calhoun is playing safety and not nickel cornerback is because of how the Steelers offense picked him apart in the first game of the season. It seems unlikely Browns defensive coordinator Gregg Williams would move Boddy-Calhoun back into that match-up.

That means Randall will have another challenge this week if he continues to play cornerback. The Steelers like to move Antonio Brown and JuJu Smith-Schuster across the formation. So no matter what, Randall will be going up against one of the league’s best receivers.

The Browns may decide to have Denzel Ward shadow Brown, as Ward’s speed can counter Brown’s agility and quickness. And because of his size, Randall could end up shadowing Smith-Schuster.

So whoever Randall goes up against, he will be facing a massive challenge. The Browns need to limit the Steelers potent passing attack if they want to put themselves in a position to win Sunday.
