The Cleveland Browns made a coaching change. They then did the unspeakable and hired defensive coordinator Gregg Williams as interim head coach.

The Cleveland Browns held out as long as they could. But eventually, when someone is as bad at their job as former head coach Hue Jackson was, it is time to move on. The Jackson move was expected. Even firing offensive coordinator Todd Haley was on the radar.

But nobody saw Gregg Williams coming. In the midst of all the firings, the Browns may have hired the perfect coach for the interim. Let me be clear.

I am not saying Gregg Williams should be the next head coach. I am not saying he should even be in consideration. But for right now, for the issues the Browns players are addressing, Gregg Williams is the perfect man for the job.

Gregg Williams comes across as a coach who is all business and no-nonsense. He is going to expect full effort every play of every game.

Since Williams’ arrival, the defense has transformed from a lackluster group to one of the better defenses in the league. They used to loaf, take plays off and not understand their responsibilities within the scheme.

Now the issues with the defense are not scheme, effort (for the most part) and understanding their roles. The defense has been the one bright spot of this team. They play with energy, they run to the ball and they know where they are supposed to be. The issues with defense now are players playing too many snaps and being on the field way too long.

Williams will hold the offense to the same expectations the defense must live up to. Given they just got rid of two dysfunctional offensive coaches, a change toward personal accountability, effort, and high expectations will be a welcome change.
