Dud: Amos Jones

One of the biggest surprises from the Cleveland Browns cleaning house last week was that special teams coordinator Amos Jones was kept on the staff.

The Browns special teams units have been one of the worst in the NFL this season, and they have not showed many signs of improvement throughout the weeks. Punter Britton Colquitt has been the only bright spot on special teams as he has been one of the best punters in the league.

On Sunday, the problems got even worse for the unit, as the Chiefs blocked a punt in the third quarter. At the time of the punt, it was still a two possession game, so the Browns needed to do whatever they could to flip field possession.

But after the blocked punt, any and all energy the Browns seemed to have was sucked away. The Chiefs scored on the ensuing possession, putting the game out of reach.

There is only one reason why the Browns special teams have been terrible this season, and that is the man running the unit.

Jones has a track record of being an overrated special teams coach, and some saw it as a surprise that the Browns brought him on to the staff this season. In 2018, he is proving once again that he is not that good of a special teams coordinator.

At this point, don’t expect the special teams to get any better this season. With Jones at the helm, the unit will continue to have mediocre showings and will put the defense and offense in bad positions throughout the game.
