Dud: Gregg Williams

Gregg Williams did not have a terrible game as a head coach, as he made a lot of aggressive decisions that paid off. Knowing that the offense needed to score as many points as possible, Williams went for it on fourth down three times, succeeding twice.

He also went for a two-point conversion every time they scored a touchdown. However, they did not successfully convert a conversion. But Williams’ aggressiveness was a breath of fresh air.

The reason that Williams was a dud this week was not because of his role as head coach, it was because of his role as defensive coordinator.

Offenses know that Williams loves to blitz and be aggressive on third down. The Chiefs owned the Browns on third down, as they were consistently calling screens. With almost the entire front seven blitzing, there was no one available to make a play on whoever was catching the screen.

Another problem that has plagued the defense this entire season has been their tackling. The Browns are at the top of the league in missed tackles. Their poor tackling allowed the Chiefs to turn a lot of short gains into explosive plays and/or touchdowns.

Yes, the Browns defense was without a lot of their key players. But tackling is the one thing that most defenders should be able to do. The fact that the Browns remain one of the worst tackling teams this season is an indictment on Williams.
