Gregg Williams – Cleveland Browns interim head coach

November 14th – John Dorsey says Gregg Williams deserves to be interviewed for Browns’ permanent HC job – Jared Dubin, CBS Sports

The first name on the list that should be mentioned is the man that took over the head coaching job when Jackson was fired, and that is Gregg Williams. Williams has been pulling double-duty as the team’s head coach while maintaining his role as defensive coordinator.

More from Dawg Pound Daily

The Browns are 1-1 since Williams has been the Browns head coach, with the loss coming from the hands of the team that is likely going to be in the AFC Championship, the Kansas City Chiefs.

Since Williams has taken over, the Browns have been playing with a different attitude and energy. The entire team looks like a much more confident group, and they are showing that with their play on the field.

However, as stated earlier, it seems unlikely that the Browns would hire a defensive-minded coach to run the team next season. But the difference with Williams than any other defensive coach they would bring in is that he has already earned Mayfield’s trust.

If Williams can end the season with a win percentage above .500, then the Browns should consider him to be the next head coach. With Freddie Kitchens as the offensive coordinator, Mayfield and the entire offense look much more comfortable. It would be hard to break up that comfort at the end of the season if the team succeeds in the last half of the year.

Dorsey said that Williams has earned an interview, but it remains to be seen how seriously the Browns would consider Williams becoming the permanent head coach.
